If you have Friday off (Veteran's Day), what are you going to do?

I have this Friday off for Veteran's Day (IT contractor at a banking client), so I think I'll head to the local pistol range with my Colt 1903 Hammerless and the Walther PP and do a little shooting. Saturday AM, I'm taking my almost-blind friend to a gun show in Maumee, OH, it will be a gun-themed weekend!

I think I'll wear my flight jacket with my Fleet Marine Force badge that "Seahawk"(Paul) was kind enough to send to me!

Being a Veteran, I have NEVER had a job that gave me the day off. I know a lot of people and friends who never served, never would serve, but enjoy a nice holiday that doesn't even remotely involve paying respects to those who have served/ given their life for our freedoms.

With the increase in Veterans that we will see in the near future, I think the POTUS should make it mandatory/ benefit that anyone who serves in the military receives Veterans Day off for life. Just as a "thank you" for their service. It's the least we can do. Thanks for your service Art and all Veterans on the BBS. Mini-rant over....

Craigster,
Thank to you and all of the other veterans who went before and after me... I have rarely ever had this "holiday" off, but when I do, I try to do something memorable. I'll stop by the local veteran's memorial in my town, visit the local coffee shop, then shoot some paper targets and listen to music while I clean the pistols. I will catch myself remembering those that I know who didn't come home or who came back wounded. Thanks again!!

I don't, but I'll start the day off by giving my dad a call to thank him (USAF 67-71).
Come to think of it, now that he's newly retired, maybe I'll wait until lunch to thank him.

And of course...thanks to all the verterans on here!

Always a melancholy day for me. My father was career Air Force, passed 20 years ago on November 17th. I was on active duty for a few years and have many career military friends especially from the Vietnam era. I interviewed for college on Veterans Day and ended up attending that school. It happened to be a military institution so I guess I could say the military has played a pretty significant role in my life for the better part of forty years.

This Friday I will reflect and remember.

Veteran's Day is not observed by the markets, so I will be at work hoping that one of my companies announces that they will cease observing Veterans' Day so that their profits will rise and their stock goes up. If they throw in a layoff of some veterans, all the better, more profit, yum. There's no sentiment in money. Do I sound sour?

I own my own business. My employees get the day off, but I'll be working.

It's my birthday. I have had off on my birthday my whole life. I was about 6 when I realized why we didn't have school. I have always made time in my day to spend a little time remembering once I found out I had uncles in WWII. This year, I will be helping my daughter with her school project. The project revolves around this flag.

Business as usual, but I'll take some time out for a scotch and cigar on the beach and a little reflection. I'm determined to do enough living for myself and a few of my buddies not afforded the opportunity.

I think only those who have been in the services should get the day off. In everyday life, I've never heard anyone else refer to it as a day of thanks and commemoration for the military. Sure the shirts in the government and the media pay lip service to it, but to most people it's just a day off.

I'll fly the flag at home, maybe have breakfast on base, and attend the ceremony. (Army '57-'84)

I'm going to school with my Daughter as they have a nice celebration each year. I'll call my Dad and thank him for serving in WWII. Then I will take my family to lunch and thank them for supporting me while serving. After that I'll wrench on my Moto Morini

I cannot stand companies that do not, at a minimum, give Veteran's Day off to Veterans!! Pet peeve of mine!

I will call my Mother and thank her for her service in WW II, Father-in-Law and thank him for his service in Vietnam, send a note to my Cousin thanking him for his service in several theaters of war/police actions/peacekeeping forces, and wish I could make the trip to my dad's grave to thank him at graveside (it has been too many years since I did that).

I will most likely do some insulating of the attic in-between.
