Anyone been to La Scala, Milano

So I just booked tickets to Don Giovanni in La Scala in December.

Has anyone here been to La Scala? What is the dress code there?

I'm used to the local opera scene where anything goes, even jeans.

The only world-class opera houses I've been to are the Met in NYC, the Stuttgarter Staatsoper and the Vienna state opera, where people dress nicely but not necessarily black tie. I'm curious to know how the Italians dress up. Do I take my tux with, or just the jeans?

I am envious. Although I probably would have chosen an Italian opera. I haven't been - but like you I have been to the Staatsoper in Vienna. There it was the gamut - tuxes to jeans but most were business attire with dresses or gowns for the ladies. In Milan, I am sure that you will see a lot of designer finery.

I would do black jeans & a sports coat. No tie.

Don Giovanni. My favourite line: "Infidelity is cruelty to one; fidelity cruelty to many."

The thing about Italians—no matter how casual they dress, they look incredibly good.

At La Scala people wear a broad range of things (seldom tuxedos and ball gowns)—but they always look sensational. Making a "bella figura" is an Italian art form, and nowhere is this more in evidence than at La Scala.

So short answer: You do not need your Tux.

See attached for more info.

You could say the same about me....

We're only in Milano for 3 days, Don Giovanni is the only opera playing at that time.

Thanks for the inputs and link.

Since we were lucky enough to get seats in a box, I guess the jeans are out.

Is that because of the 13-inch penis?

I remember a 60 Minutes interview with Pavarotti (many years ago) where he told of an appearance at La Scala. He admitted to have blown a note and (according to him) was pelted with fruit. It was amazing to the American interviewer that this happened but Pavarotti just smiled and admitted to making an error. To me, the amazing bit about the story is that the crowd actually HAD the fruit. So....a few soft plums might be in order, LOL. Sounds like a great experience have a great time

You could also wear jeans, provided the footwear and jacket etc. are tres chic. Italians are very relaxed about this as long as you look fashionista good.

You can be sure that the only persons wearing tuxedos will be British tourists, who always seem to travel with a spare tuxedo.
