Vietnam in HD
Anyone else watching? WW2 in HD was fantastic, this is just as good. Thanks to all that served here and elsewhere, these shows are a harsh reminder of just how horrible war is.

Yep. I was born in 67 so I don't recall much. It really is a great documentary.
I had an uncle that survived the war and then was killed in a car crash a day or so after returning home to the US.

I am watching as well. I must say it is tastefully narrated to support the video. I continue to be amazed how shortsighted our government and military leadership was during that period.

I watched part of it today.I turned it off.I lost too many friends there.I volunteered and thought it was the right thing to do.I never thought at 25years old I would say this, but at 70 years old,I think it was a waste of many good men.I am aware that today is the Marine Corps birthday and tomorrow is Veterens day and I do not make that statement lightly.

I have been watching it too. Last night there was an episode leading to the time that I was there 70/71.
This episode was about the taking of hamburger hill. It ended with comments from guys about the kind of home coming they got, sickening for me. They had it a bit worse than I did, They had volunteered and had served with great bravery and distinction, came home very decorated. Then to be met at the airport by demonstrators and have them dump on them. It made me hurt all over again. Whew, that is sooo far behind me, I have moved so far since then. Haaaa. That is a big exhale, not a laugh. Yes it is a very well done series. Watching tho make one realize how little the military and civilian leadership has remembered of those hard won lessons. Hang in there tfmcmahon. And have a good day being alive tomorrow. Live a bit extra for your Bros. Last edited by tevake; 11-10-2011 at 06:20 PM.. |

I agree completely. Kind of like a Ken Burns documentary but in color with all the subjects still alive... and a lot of commercials. While watching I once again realized how fortunate I was. After receiving my draft notice in 1968 I joined the USAF (the best way to stay out of Vietnam) and spent my four years at Randolph AFB in SATX. What I guess is odd for someone my age, I know a LOT of people that went to Vietnam but don't know anyone that was killed or wounded in action? A friend who handled agent orange is a different story though, his life has been hell. But you never knew about the luck of the draft. My brother was drafted in 1970 and spent his tour of duty in Germany.

Ah the luck of the draft. Three months after I was drafted, the birthday lottery came in. My date came up well into the safe zone. Oh well too late for me. One more term in school would have seen me doing something else.

very well done.
really hit home in the ending when they said we were not there to win, but only not to lose. 14,000-16,000 casualities per year = ~ 41 people per day. staggering. many of us are still reluctant to talk about our experiences, so yes, the episode last night was very well done. Thanks for posting this, first I've heard of this. Looks like the DVR picked up the replays, I'll try to check them out over the weekend.
My dad was drafted and I know the experienced changed his life. I try to learn as much as I can about this period in our history. |
