Retorque them while they are hot, repeat that process several times- that should end it.

if all else fails get bolts drilled for safety wire and lock them in pairs. However I've never needed to do that.

Jared at Pelican Parts 01-20-2012 07:22 AM

Aluminum intake? You need to use a dab of Loctite on the bolts. Common problem.

GH85Carrera 01-20-2012 09:40 AM

It is not the intake bolts getting loose it is the exhaust manifold bolts.

Jared at Pelican Parts 01-20-2012 09:59 AM

Re-torque the exhaust fasteners after heat cycling them a few times. Should be fine after a couple turns.

EarlyPorsche 01-20-2012 10:04 AM

Bolts with lock tabs are your friend on any exhaust header/manifold install. I can't remember who makes them but I want to guess ARP.

VincentVega 01-20-2012 10:33 AM

I had pretty good results with ARP, even though I checked that at every oil change and at least one was usually a little loose.

Yep, I don't know if it's the new gaskets compressing or what, but that's not uncommon in a new install. Just check them from time to time and after a bit they'll stop needing to be tightened.

Another reason why you need to run the hell out of that motor. Get it good and hot and check everything.

I am sure everyone on the board has been waiting for a update on my project. ;)

The new dual exhaust system had a resonance at 2,000 RPM that made the entire vehicle hum. It was the worst at 50 MPH while just cruising along. Most of my 8.5 mile daily commute is at 50 MPH and 2,000 RPM. I went by the muffler shop and he added a 12 inch resonator to one side. It should be called a de-resonator much like folks say sway bars and they are more like anti-sway bars or stabilizer bars. Anyway the de-resonator has helped a lot. Now it does not have the 2,000 RPM waaaaaaaa resonance but it has a mild rumble that is not objectionable.

I plan to go to the dyno sometime this week. I need to make an appointment with the dyno and I will post my numbers.

waiting for Dyno...so, the manifold leak?

GH85Carrera 01-31-2012 09:12 AM

I re-torqued all the bolts. The ones close to the firewall were the only ones that had really loosened up. I will try to find some locking bolts of the proper size and see if that fixes it. Most of the bolts seem to be for headers.

Hope that works for ya...leaky exhaust is a true PITA.

Just another update. Everything is running great.

I have an appointment tomorrow for another dyno run. The exhaust system seems to be doing it's job. After several tanks of gas with the new dual exhaust my gas mileage has gone up almost two MPG. The puts me almost back to when I was with the 305.

I had to replace the power steering pump this weekend. Since the engine swap the PS belts would scream occasionally. I had the belt as tight as I dared to get it. The new pump is nice and quiet. Getting the pulley off and back on is a pain. I don't think I would have been able to do it without an impact wrench.

Tomorrow I will post my new dyno run results. It will be interesting to see if the dual exhaust really increased power.

pwd72s 02-28-2012 08:35 AM

staying tuned...

GH85Carrera 02-28-2012 09:35 AM

Welp, here are the results....

The text is hard to read so here is a close up of the results:

Nothing to brag about for raw power but I was never looking for that. That is real world rear tire power.

One thing that is good to get is the air fuel ratio for the run. For sure it running rich. I will get my chip modified to cure that. The overall driveability is great.

I have a video of the run. I will post that shortly.

GH85Carrera 02-28-2012 09:50 AM

OK, here is the exciting dynamic award winning video. OK, I have not won any awards for it YET. ;)

<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zwTD0ukklkU?version=3&feature=player_detailpage">< param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zwTD0ukklkU?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object>

If you watch it full screen you can see the throttle open up when he floors it.

masraum 02-28-2012 10:04 AM

Sweet, how is the driving experience compared to the old 305?

I just had to spend $35 and find out just how much power I have with the same old 305 exhaust manifolds and single exhaust system. Here is the dyno sheet:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1325193534.jpg

Not exactly spectacular results. The operator was rolling on the throttle to keep it from downshifting so it has a very slow uptake. The max power is just 151 HP so a 30% increase and the torque is now 215 so just 12% increase from the 305.

I will replace the 305 manifolds with the 350 manifolds I have and have the dual exhaust with a crossover pipe and then re-test. I don't expect much more than 10 or 15 hp and little if any torque increase.

I will send this to my fuel injection guy and he can modify the chip to not be so rich in the WOT mode. I guess rich is way better than lean.

It will be a couple of weeks before I have the new dyno run done. I will post those results as well.

OK, now we've got the previous and current on the same screen for comparison. It's just too bad one is vs speed and one is vs rpm. Still, that's a decent increase.

Just great. In my average driving the only time I need the extra power is on a few short on-ramps. It is nice to have the extra power when I need it.

That's the bottom line...:D Adequate power, good overall balance & good economy...
