does your S.O. know of all your purchases?

i just logged on to pay my CC. found out my wife took care of it. dawned on me that my CC is linked to our checking account. duh.

how can i be expected to surprise her with a Christmas gift if she can see all my transactions? more importantly, how can i buy more guns?

interesting being married..hehe. no more secrets.

Yeah, she knows it all. I think over the past 15 years I may have bought a couple of things that she didn't know about using cash that I'd slowly accumulated.

I don't think mine want's to know. I handle the finances so I know pretty much what she spends. I try not to say much about her spending as she doesn't say anything about mine. Now we don't buy anything big without talking about it, but sometimes those cars, boats, motorcycles and guns just follow you home.

We both have access to your credit card statements. (No secrets in a marriage is actually a good thing...) When it comes to Christmas and birthday gifts, we'll usually tell each other that our statements are 'offlimits' until after the gifts are revealed.

As far as purchases other than gifts go, we will typically discuss a purchase over $100.00 before we actually make that purchase. A couple of good reasons for doing this:
- We aren't surprised when the bill arrives.
- We don't blow out our budget for the month by both of us buying some high-ticket items not anticipating the other person's purchase of similarly priced goods.
- By discussing it, and taking the time to do so, the 'impulse buying' notion is greatly diminished. Often, we both come to the conclusion of not buying a desired product even before we discuss it together.
- Future 'discussions' of why we purchased items are less confrontational, since on higher priced items we arrive at a mutual agreement BEFORE the purchase is made.

We've made it thus far (17 years of marriage) with this 'system' in place, and it seems to work well for us.

Then again, when it comes to $$, Mrs. Z's motto is, "You earn it, I spend it!"

My wife doesn't know and doesn't want to know. She hasn't earned a dime for more than two decades and has zero involvement in our finances.

We have a joint account for the household budget and we each have our own account. So long as the joint is covered we don't care. She does not like me spending my money on spoons and vehicles. But she knows her protest will just delay the inevitable. Besides I feed the joint account way more and I aso take care of surprises in the budget.

....we work hard for our money, we take care of the family, everyone is healthy and happy and we aren't paying for a mistress...so we can buy all the damn spoons and vehicles we want....so long as those things happen.

All spoons go into the safe anyhow. So as long as I don't empty the safe in front of her.....she has no clue or she does but won't go there.

My wife runs all our financial books: no where to run to, no where to hide.

Thank god.

I am very good at the big picture stuff, she is relentless at the details. Our money management, farm execution and other business issues, and I say this with all kidding aside, are like a mosaic: We both create the image and she fills it with an assemblage of small financial pieces that work as a whole.

We both work and always have.

She could buy a 911 and I'd be none the wiser.

Hey...

Hey...
I married an accountant, let's just say that I haven't seen my checkbook since I got engaged.

It's for the better in my case as well, I never was very disciplined about balancing that pesky checkbook. It does, however, make surprising her with a gift nearly impossible.

This is our third year of marriage.

At first we agreed to discuss anything over $50... but that became less and less the case.

Between the two of us we have four bank accounts and three CC's (IIRC).

I have a hard time keeping track of everything, and felt bad when my wife was surprised by some expenses (as if I was hiding it from her)

So I decided to go full disclosure and opened a mint.com account with all my data on there and she has access.

So far it has been OK, her biggest complaint has been how much I spend on going out (food) but she can see the times I have gone off the chart (usually a sushi binge) and not complained about it.... yet...

So, if you die in an accident, she won't have a clue how to handle finances? Hmmm.

My wife handles all the payments. I balance the checkbooks.

I keep separate stash of money in work CU for things like presents for her, money for trips, etc.
