Anyone know old Chinese art? Rick- Can you translate this?

Friend of mine bought this at a garage sale a couple of years ago. Woman who sold it said it was very old. End to end the scroll is about 5'7".

The characters mean wealth and luck. The flowers are peony which signify wealth.

You can buy ones just like it for fairly cheap. To quote my g/f, "unremarkable."

Thanks for the PM with all the great info. If it ends up on Ebay I'll post here... then we'll all know its value soon enough.

Thanks jyl! It doesn't appear to be a reproduction - no signs of machine printing that I can tell. The material looks like it's textured silk.

The other scrolls my friend has are different subjects and I'm guessing artist. We're going to pull them out and take a close look at them soon.

I just realized there are additional symbols on the back:

Those characters are the name of the flower and the name of the artist (and their stamp).

China has so many artists these are mostly all made by hand on silk. Remember, 1.3B people. Again, according to the g/f, it could be worth something but on first glance it is a pretty typical example of which there are millions.

just because it's old and original doesn't mean it's valuable. there's thousands (if not millions) of original art pieces done by everyone from studying artists to street artists. they're all hand drawn, so not printed repro's.

the main thing to look at is not the quote. it's the red stamp to see if it's anyone famous.

I have a couple of these in the house. Bought them in Beijing for about $5US each. Easily millions of these floating around.

The red stamp has the artist's name (and it is also written above, but they don't look exactly the same since one is calligraphy and the other uses ancient style of character). There also is a date that my g/f can figure out later tonight (different way of counting years).

Wrong! It says "made in U.S.A."
