				Do you ever wonder.....

what mechanics er technicians at your local indy garage or Porsche dealership drive? Sometimes I arrive early for my repair job and spy on the technicians to see what they drive to their place of work. You would think that they would drive something super reliable. Conversely if they had a high maintenance vehicle, they have the expertise to fix it. Do you know any technicians that swear by any make? Are there any techs out there? One more thing x thread xthread warning!!!!!!!Customers usually are not allowed to enter the work area. Do you ever get the chance to talk to your tech.? | ||

I am a Porsche "only" tech. I have had many Porsches but am currently without. My last one was a 1987 3.4 liter twin plugged Carrera. As to my daily driver? Its a Toyota. (see my signature line) I have owned it since new. Its just about to turn over 110,000 miles. I do all my own work on it. It has NEVER stranded me or broken down. The only thing I have had to replace was the air/fuel ratio sensor in the exhaust. (like a wide band 02 sensor) My wife's daily driver is a benz. (see signature line) Its a lease and gets replaced every three to four years. I have no complaints about that car either. Would I own a newer Porsche? Probably not. Seems like most of the newer Porsches are like Bic disposable lighters. The ones with the m/96 engines are a joke. On the Boxsters, its water pumps, engine mounts, IMS issues, ignitions switchs...etc. etc. 996s have the same problems. We had a Boxster in the shop last week. 2001 Boxster S with 55,000 miles on it. A $28 dollar IMS tensioner chain ramp inside the engine broke and basically totalled the car because the repair costs more then the car is worth. Fortunately the customer found a low miles motor out of a wreck for a reasonable price. I'll be putting that back in the car Monday or Tuesday.

People drive various things to fit their lifestyle, budget, etc. I'm reminded of this thread....Ferrari Area 51 / Second Interview In my case, some places you work...such as my case...you don't want to use (or have to use) the product.

Walker drives a Diamond T. Or a badgeless white 930. Most mechanics I have known drive pieces of S. When they can't carry enough jugs of water to make it to work, THEN they replace the water pump.

That is what I have usually observed. There is always that guy that has a new silverado or what not, but most of the techs that I parked next to ( including myslef) generally drive beaters.

Mechanics driving POS's makes perfect sense. They have the ability and the facility/tools (and access to wholesale parts) to rectify whatever problems that do crop up. Seems to me, that certain used cars are an amazing value that a normal non mechanical guy would be scared to buy for fear of getting buried in costs of ownership. Cheers

I've always liked cars and learned how to fix them, and I had always driven pieces of S. I'd get them for free or nearly so, do almost nothing to them and drive them to the junkyard after a couple or few years. One day I decided that, since I don't spend ANY money on mechanic services (repair expense is limited to just the cost of parts, which can sometimes be had at the junkyard), I can drive anything I want. I considered the 2-3 ton tanks from the '50's.....old Buicks and Caddys. I was also drawn to the late-sixties muscle cars (really wanted a Roadrunner or, better yet, a Charger). Ultimately, I decided to drive..............a Porsche 911. That's how I met you guys.

He has a REALLY neat collection of cars. The first and only time I've seen a flat head V12 (and he had two of those engines) was JW shop. The de-badged 930 looks pretty cool with it's budget flat white paint. When I first looked at it, I thought it was really oxidized, then he told me that he scuffed it to get that look. Very cool. angela

My fun cars are in my sig. I drive a newer generic GM SUV/crossover because I have 2 kids and my wife drives a '96 VW golf winter beater that I have about $600 into. Golf has 250K, km on the OD...barely broke in. My wife puts on 50k kms (about 31K miles) per year on her car and her only requirements are it's reliable, everything works and it looks acceptable at 130kph. Her past cars was a '99 passat 1.8T (300k, km) '95 golf (600+K, km), '71 superbeetle (400k miles), '82 rabbit turbo diesel (700K, km), '76 westfailia (250K miles). The bug in my sig has been my daily driver since the early eighties, just finishing a complete rebuild, it should be good for another 20 summers. We could afford new cars but driving beaters, that you can fix yourself, has certain financial advantages.

after almost 30 yrs at high-end auto dealerships i've seen little change in what employees drive. 95% of techs driving 'beaters'. office staff drive newer (in warranty) vehicles. parts guys have the best off-brand rides. salesmen drive demos or high-end off-brands.
