All I can think is that the driver must have been really hammered to rear end a fully marked Sheriff's cruiser.
Be careful out there...

Luckily, the Deputy seems okay...a bit sore & banged up, but okay...

Yeah, that's why you don't want to mess with a truck.

He will be lucky if he doesn't have symptoms for life. That's a huge hit. Now, why did he bite the wheel? No Belt? Lots of cops don't wear belts. If he didn't have the belt on. I can almost guarantee he will be messed up for years. Not big time, but aggravating pains and quirks.
I'll give light odds he retires on a medical (justified) within a year. |

I dont think airbags would deploy in that accident. I believe there is a decelerometer and not an accelerometer triggering the airbags. Do not quote me.

Crazy.
Almost as crazy as being in a HUMONGOUS 24' diesel Budget truck on a cross country trip on a lonely stretch of I-10 at dawn and having the ONLY other car on the road come up behind you and "WHAM" right into your car trailer hauling your 911 (guy fell asleep at the wheel and just kerslammoed right into the back of me). He was driving a F350 dually and the front end of the truck was demolished. Tore the car trailer (big, heavy-duty, all-wheels-off-the-ground one, not one of those dinky two-wheels-on-the-ground dollys) right off the back and bent the crap out of all the rolled steel sections underneath the box of the truck. The guy was damn lucky to be alive. My 911 got a bit messed up but survived (some attachment points had to be rebuilt/replaced). The safety chains saved the car. There are some ungodly stupid people out there. Be careful!

IIRC, they disable the airbags on POPO cars so they can do "PIT" maneuvers and use the push bars without the risk of deploying the air bags

I believe some cars disable the airbags when the seatbelts are not fastened. If he bit the wheel, can you imagine if his face had instead been hit at close proximity by a deploying airbag?
