Taking an internship/Moving to Houston!

Today I got the formal offer on an internship that I have been in the application process for over two months on. I'm excited that I passed all the interviews in a large company, first time for me to have to formally interview.

I'm just moving into the supply side of the Sign industry that I have grown up in. I will be working with the regional sales reps for the largest LED display manufacturer in the country. Starting in May I will spend 6wks at corporate headquarters in SD, and then I will be in Houston until sometime in November. I will be traveling with the sales reps, doing product demos, going to tradeshows, etc. Living the life of a sales rep basically.

So Houston boys, look out, I'm coming! SmileWavySmileWavy

Congratulations, Sidney! Well done! SmileWavy

KFC911 12-14-2011 01:22 AM

Congratulations Sid...go get 'em!!!

ps: I assume SD is South Dakota and not San Diego?

Tishabet 12-14-2011 02:14 AM

Awesome! My internship experience in college was defining, nothing like taking what you've learned and applying it in real life. Good luck in Houston!

oldE 12-14-2011 02:25 AM

Sidney,

Congratulations. This is a big step and a wonderful opportunity to get a lot of practical experience.

Two things. Never forget how little you really know and remember the people you are working with don't have all the answers either. They do have a lot of experience, and, if you are lucky, they might give you a chance to try some of your own ideas and add to your personal experience.

It will be memorable.

Make the most of it.
Best
Les

Congrats Dude!!!

(Don't get a home in Pasadena, Deer Park, LaPorte ;-)

Which part of town are you going to be working in? It has been so long since I lived there everything has changed, except the drivers. Well, they seemed worse last time I was there... Be prepared for HOT, HUMID, HUMID, HUMID, well, you get the idea.... Used to get out of the shower, "dry off" and still be damp. A/C is more of a necessity than around Central Oklahoma. And you are NOT from Dallas.

Congratulations Sidney, let the adventure begin

Moving to Houston and you will be 21 to boot. Party town. Just remember showing up at the job sober and rested is important. It is hard to do a good job with a killer hangover. Pace yourself!

red-beard 12-14-2011 04:33 AM

Is the company on the Northwest Side of town, just off of US-290?

Welcome to Houston!

s_morrison57 12-14-2011 04:39 AM

Cool Sid but is this a between semester thing or have you dropped the pharmacy gig - either way - make the best of it. Is there any rocks to climb in Houston?
Finn

bivenator 12-14-2011 04:46 AM

Hiding daughter now, congrats Sid.

There are, but they are all horizontal...

Congratulations and good luck on the internship!

Congrats & welcome to Houston.

BRPORSCHE 12-14-2011 05:28 AM

Red,

If I remember correctly he will be off 290.

Yep, I know the place.

Sid - To have the most fun, you need to rent inside "the loop" aka I-610.

Rents will be significantly higher, but well worth it. Specifically "The Heights", Midtown, Montrose, and off Washington.

All worth it.

red-beard 12-14-2011 06:09 AM

If it were me, and I were Sid's age, it would be off Washington.

porsche4life 12-14-2011 06:28 AM

Sadly, the apartment will be provided, so I will have no input as to were I will be. I suspect it will be something close to the office.

And yes Red, you are correct.

Yup, I will be in South Dakota the first few weeks.

Finn, I am taking a the Fall semester off from school, and no I am no longer pursuing a Pharmacy degree. After working as a pharmacy tech, I realized I would rather do something else. I am working on a Marketing degree now.

M.D. Holloway 12-14-2011 06:31 AM

Thats great! Your odds of get'n laid just improved!

tweezers74 12-14-2011 06:33 AM

Congratulations, Sid! Sounds like an awesome opportunity! Have fun and take full advantage of the learning opportunities. You are going to have a blast!

Dueller 12-14-2011 06:35 AM

Houston Region SCCA has a monthly autoX year round....but I think they've banned well set up 944's.:D

porsche4life 12-14-2011 06:37 AM

Drat....

I most likely won't have the 944 with me, just my trusty Corolla

Drive the compny car...drag the 944 down to play with.

Plus you're only an hour and a half from TWS...host to a number of PCA, SCCA, NASA, Chunp Car, LeMons races/autoX's.

Schedule: http://www.texasworldspeedway.com/the-track/track-schedule.html

porsche4life 12-14-2011 06:49 AM

I'm not sure what the stipulations will be on how much I get the company car, if it stays at the office yet or what....

And I'll be living in an apartment, so unless someone is going to loan me a garage, I'd have to rent a place to store and work on the 944....

We don't get the humidity, but it got crazy hot in OK this year, like we now hold the record for highest average temps for anywhere in the US....

There is a pretty kick ass climbing gym near the office I will be working in. Not much else though, houston is damned flat, I'm considering leaving my mountain bike at home and just taking a road bike.

I expect that they have a "viper pit" setup in Jersey Village. The problem is, prime hunting territory is inside the loop. It is a 20 minute run, but you need to be careful on the return.

porsche4life 12-14-2011 06:58 AM

They haven't had any corporate apartments down there until now. They will have a few interns start this spring, and then I will come down during the summer... I should know in a few months where I will be staying.

I'm not going to complain about where they put me, they are footing the bill....

You are brave...I don't think the production floor is air conditioned...SmileWavy

And then when a train goes by...

porsche4life 12-14-2011 07:03 AM

You must be thinking of someone else. This bunch doesn't have any manufacturing down there. They just have a sales office, selling signs, scoreboards, and the like...

Here ya go.... I am sure you can just "finance" it. You deserve the best.

Bianchi HORS CATEGORIE V Oltre Super Record Road Bike

GH85Carrera 12-14-2011 07:15 AM

Wow, 11 grand for a bike!

The Schwinn Sting Ray with the banana seat that I has a kid cost way less 1/5 of the sales tax on that thing!

I think i know where he's gonna be, and if so, I know people there.

If it's the same place, then he'll also have fun, because there are some...racecar...people there...

porsche4life 12-14-2011 08:59 AM

Nope mike, they just make led modules and lighting. The company I am working for manufactures LED message centers.

And I have contacts with this company. We've done a considerable amount of business with them in the last few years.

That's too bad, the president of US LED races a mini. Like, races at the Rolex 24 Hours...

Groesbeck Hurricane 12-14-2011 11:26 AM

Syd,

Enjoy the digs! Remember, part of your interview process is how well you take care of things and how well you maintain the documentation. Or is it just like that in pharmaceuticals?

Anyway, lots to do on the NW side.

When I lived down there people would look at you funny if you lived off Montrose/Westeimer or in or around The Heights. Of course I worked in The Ward, Fifth Ward to most people. Yep, fun times...

I should mention, STAY AWAY from The Ward!!!!! (But there are some really good restaurants nearby.)

scottmandue 12-14-2011 11:37 AM

Congrats Sid, sounds like a great job with a solid future.

I have a LED sign here at work with some segments out... can you hook me up? J/K! :D

Not kidding about the sign but about you hooking me up with parts.

Good luck!
