Guitar players - check out my new toy.

It wasn't an impulse buy, but I wasn't planning on stumbling across such a good deal today (though I was looking for one).

Yes, a Marshall JCM 2000 DSL-100. I've been wanting to get back into gigging and have been looking for a band to get involved with. I came across a nice Ampeg 4x12 with Celestions for $140 last week and scooped that up. Then the hunt for a head began. I just can't bring myself to pay what a Soldano runs and, frankly, I question whether I'm good enough to know why/how they sound better than other amps that cost a fraction of what they cost. So I was looking for a 5150 II or some kind of Marshall in the same price range. Yesterday I bid on a 5150 II on eBay and am still the high bidder, but there's no way in hell I'm going to win it for $550. If I do, I can easily flip it to get my money back or more. Or I can see how it stacks up against this Marshall and keep whichever one I like the best after a few hours of playing through it.

At the Guitar Center today I used one of the new EVH Wolfgangs through this amp and a Mesa Boogie cabinet. I don't think the Wolfgang is worth nearly what they cost and my Ernie Ball kills it in every way. The store was packed today, but I needed to see what this amp could do, so I gave it a good 30 min. workout and a few of those at serious volume. Little kids were covering their ears and I think a few of them may have soiled their diapers. But my hearing is so shot, it wasn't that loud for me and I like sitting right in front of a cooking tube amp and feeling the fillings in my teeth shake. Can't wait to beat on this thing during the week when the neighbors are all at work.

Actually, I did take the rear cover off, but forgot to take a photo of the orange hot tubes.

Big EVH fan right? Nice score! Triple super lead?

I've got a couple Marshalls myself (JCM800 '59 Superlead MK1 & JCM800 2203) and love them. Played pretty much all the reasonably priced (<$5k) tube amps and always came back to the JCM800 for best bang for buck...

Which Celestion speakers are loaded in that cab; G12T75s that are in the 300w cabs, or something a little more bluesy like a 25 or 30w speaker?

If you ever want to experience saturated bliss like no other check this guy out

Kasha Amplifiers Products - Innovating Your Sound with ROCKMOD, RoBo-CAB and Accessories

I swear by the Quickmod, plugs right into one of the preamp sockets and away you go!

Or you could be a real pompus a$$ and play one of these
Aviator

Get it setup yet? Biased and loaded with a set of matched tubes?

Post up a clip of that thing smoking the resident fluffer
Enjoy!

Sweet score!

Get pics of the speakers and tubes.

Love your EBMM. I've wanted one of those for a long time.

Ok, I pulled the back of the cabinet off last night, wanted to see if I could remove that chunk of wood that covers part of the top left speaker where the Ampeg badge screws in. No dice. I'd have to remove the mesh and use a coping saw very carefully to not break it off past where the speaker screws in. I would eventually like to put some steel mesh in the front.

Once everyone is up and about today, I'll try my Les Paul and ES-335 through this rig. The power tubes are EL-34's and the preamp tubes appear to be stock Marshalls. I need to put some hours on this before I decide on new preamp tubes.

Oh, price tag was $599 and I got them to throw in a new footswitch, which they didn't have with the amp. That's about what they go for on eBay and shipping would have been the same as the sales tax I paid. I wanted to be able to try it out though, so I was fine buying it in a store.

BTW, do I need to rebias is after installing new preamp tubes or after new power tubes? I have new GT's in my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. I wonder if I can just swap them.

This is one I was watching on eBay. I love how the guy replaced the cloth mesh with steel mesh. Or is that plexi glass? Looks very cool.

You shouldn't need to rebias after preamp tubes. Power tubes - depends. Some amps have fixed bias. If you run EL34s you should be fine (my fav power tube for guitar).

That looks like Plex....

Do that Marshall logo in an etch look vinyl and you would get a nice subtle look.

The vinyl I mentioned actually gives that same look, just less work...

G12T 75! That's pretty much a 300w Marshall cab...sweet! Nice price. There was a day when any tube marshall was 1500+... <700?! Wow

I bet that les paul will sound great through that rig.

For pre amp tubes check out mojo music/tubes. I use Mullard in my amps, pricey but buttery Nate @ Mojo has nos of just about anything for a marshall.

Good stuff!
