How fast can a Mustang go?

It was an automatic. Does that make a difference?
|
I saw 140...;) Get caught going past 100 on any Oregon road, and it's a $2,000 minimum fine, loss of license for a minimum of 30 days, and possible confiscation of the car. So, I guess I'm not going to make such a test.
(edit) I'm wondering if he went to an aftermarket aluminum driveshaft...I've heard tales of those having balance problems, causing vibrations at higher speeds. Pretty impressive speedometer climbing up until the end....especially since the title says it's a V-6? |
Bet the guy left a pile in his underwear. Pretty good acceleration. It took right off from 80.

My old man is a television repair man. He's got this ULTIMATE set of tools. I can fix it!

One more reason to stick w/ 911s. Hey, any Porsche fans here? I really like Porsches.
|
Doesn't it depend on how high the cliff is?
|
Until it reaches terminal velocity. Even then a beetle can beat a 997 Turbo S cabriolet to a certain distance.

Depends on the cliff...

I currently have a 944S which is good for more than 135, but then there is the race car- An early 944 prepped to SCCA's ITS Class. With such limited prep allowed, and the rules requiring the windows to be open, there is no track I've been on with a long enough straight to get past 130 or so. At least the driveline has never let go (yet). Still tempted by the 2005-09 Mustangs. Nice cars. |
My 911 will go 155mph in pretty short order. Or so I'm told.
|
First dibs on pushing the Mustang off the cliff!:D

I'll gladly let you push my 944 over a cliff for a much smaller check... Lol

I'm thinking that the driveshaft taking a dump at 140 was some king of fail safe built into the Mustang... probably had to do with cafe standards or sumtin...
|
Strong engine. Seriously. That's a strong NA V6.

From another site is that the car is speed limited to 112 ( car taped hda the Governor removed.) and that the drive-shaft is a thin-wall design to reduce weight to increase mpg.
So it's Bush's fault. |

Jim is correct. Ford reduced the weight of the V6 drive shaft to up the MPG. Once the flaw was discovered, Ford's answer was to put a speed governor on the engine.

944 transaxles typically do not fail in this way they will slowly develop noise from bearings that are failing... Not simply break on ya And yes they do go 135... I had mine up to 140 mph on the GPS or 147mph on the clock.. |
The video reminds be of this: (instead of 3, it's 140!)

C6 corvettes do not have a speed limiter other than lack of HP My car is able to do 186mph in 5th or 6th. It just plain runs out of hp to go faster.
There's a law case from the '60's or 70's that started the speed limiter thing in cars. It seems that there was a Plymouth muscle car that had factory tires on it that some guys got running 135+ mph and crashed when the tires failed at speed. That's why our cars have odd limits of speed 98 mph for most trucks, 112 is common for sedans 154 for hp sedans. Cafe standards do have a effect on car safety. lighter, smaller brakes, narrower tires etc. |
How fast can a Mustang go?
As fast as you can push it OR As fast as the Tow Truck will go.... |

BTW, in case you haven't noticed this is an auto enthusiast website. Do you really think anyone is going to applaud a car that undulates over bumps and drags the door handles on curves? |
Matt, I own a 2012, and while it is no BMW, it is a cool car for what it costs. As for the 6 speed transmission, it comes with 2:73 gears that will get you 31 mpg on the highway. However, unlike many other cars, you can order any number of gear sets up to 4:11 as an option. Or for about $300 you can retrofit any gear set you want. Course gas mileage will suffer as you go up the ratios.
You can also order any suspension package you want, from the rental car wallowing pig, to the very stiff Boss suspension. Price is very reasonable. As for limited top speed? New chip solves that problem. The bottom line is you get a lot of bang for the buck with a new Mustang. How many V-6's are out there putting out 305 horsepower stock? |
Kurt, no arguments on the motor, it's a damn good one. With a proper sports suspension and a manual gearbox I could see it being a very fun little car.
|
An 08 gt500 will do 140 without breaking a sweat and get there fast enough to turn your britches brown.
|
A web site Usfra home page has the application forms for either the 130 MPH or 150 MPH Club.
$140.00 and you get an up and back run. I am seriously thinking of giving the 911 a shot at the 150. It sucks not being able to dive the car at it's potential on public roads so the Bonniville Salt Flats are one long days ride for me to get there. You have to wear a full faced snell/Dot helmet and a couple other safety items. You get a certificate. I know it is hokey but at least you won't get arrested. Has anyone gone that route? |
