After having to wait almost 9 years, I finally got to take my son deer hunting and...

he got his first deer! My son wrestled varsity from 7th grade until graduation and continued wrestling at American University through his sophomore year so there wasn't any time for hunting trips. Finally, after all of the waiting I was able to take him to good friend of mine's hunting camp in Mississippi, and on his first day, he bagged a respectable buck. It's a nice 8 pointer that weighed in at 155 lbs. Needless to say, I'm as excited about his first deer as he is!

Outstanding! Well done.

Oh, but just one thing... from all the way out here in the West, I can only see four points...

Just kidding. Give the kid a great big hug.

It's very unusual for two bucks to be harvested on the same day, but we were lucky and good.....my buddy spotted the other buck buried into deep brush before he shot him. The unusual thing about this deer was that the rear teeth wore down to the nub. Based on the worn teeth and the gray around his eyes, I'd say the buck was about 7 yrs old. It was the end of the rut season for our area so he only weighed 175 lbs.

There have been several big bucks taken over the years but this is one of the top three. Not too sure about how it scored out but you don't need a score sheet to know this is an awesome rack (for a deer).

He shot the deer Monday and we left Charleston Wednesday. The sad part of the trip was not running into Morgan Freeman but there is always next year.

I bet y'all had a great time on your trip. The time spent together is priceless and a successful hunt just adds to the memory.

The size of the deer is about the only thing you guys out west will admit to being smaller. Now it's just a matter of time before someone in the mid-west chimes in with a photo or two of a big burly whitetail or a muley.
