Sudden raise in oil pressure a sign of eminent failure?
I have only blown up two motors in my life, One was catastrophic at 5700 rpm, and threw parts out the side of the block, 355 chevy, and the other , I just ran until the motor locked up. That one did not have an oil pressure guage, so I did not know what was going on, but just before I grenaded the 355 I remember for a few days before that the oil pressure rose a few psi.
My 257,000 mile beater Grand Cherokee's 318 has suddenly picked up about 15-20 psi extra oil pressure. It still purs like a switch watch, and I notice no oil consumption, or funny noises, but last week , I was goofing around with the kid in the car, and revved the pee out of the poor thing. I am wondering if I will finally kill this thing off. I am going to drive it until it no longer moves under it's own power.

On jeeps a bad oil pressure sender can register too high or low.

I had a bad sender on my Chevy truck. I'm told they will fail to the point that all the oil shoots out of the block.

Check the gauge....replace sender, maybe look at a clogged filter?
Does the sender allow for removal and a pressure gauge to be hooked up direct to the block? I used an extra braided brake line and a small gauge for my Harley....it might be a cheap test.

"Revving the pee" out of an engine with no load is a no-no.
There's a famous video that appears to have been removed from the web of a new salesman at a dealer display in Canada revving a new Ferrari to redline in the display stand. The engine suddenly just stops and oil surges out from under the car. Ugly.

Tap the gauge a few times like they do in the movies.

What they said, but you don't even need oil if you're using Slick50.

Nah. An oil change isn't going to do anything. You need a sender. Revving it may have just spiked pressure in the sender and damaged the old brittle fiber disk.
