Windows Vista Antispyware 2012
Any recommendations on how to get rid of it? When I do a google search every site wants me to buy something.
Apparently McAfee web and e-mail protection did not work. It pops up three windows every now and then.

Your PC is probably infected...
The anti-virus are 80-90% effective. The best thing is to use different but on demand. (I do this) Try this Microsoft scanner (this is what their tech.support uses) http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

MalwareBytes to clean it (boot in Safe mode), then use Microsoft Security Essentials to prevent further infections. Were you running an antivirus? If not, why not? If so, switch to one that's more effective (and free)...

I just went thru a session with that sucker. I didn't open it as they wanted but couldn't much else with all the pop-ups. Tried several things .....no help.....it was even in Safe Mode.
I did a system restore which is pretty easy on my HP with Vista. That nuked it. Dunno what woulda happened had I downloaded the sucker.....and don't want to find out. A nasty sumbeoch McAfee Pro couldn't deal with it. Found it but couldn't delete it.

If you can't clean it up, send me the PC, I'll clean it up and send it back the next day...

First off, save everything you want on the hard drive (or partition it into two areas and save your good stuff on "D" drive) then format the puppy and install Win 7 on the computer.
Vista is not really a good OS and you can pick up W7 for less than $100 these days.

McAfee is junk. A bright pink elephant carrying Al Qaeda could slip past them.

Do I need this? It costs $25. Is there a way to just delete the files and registry?
How did I get it? Windows makes such a big deal about loading anything (screen goes dark etc) and I never accepted anything.

I'll second the recommendation for Malwarebytes. The free version should work just fine in cleaning that bug from your system.

OK I see. The free version is different from the 14 day free trial.

I have never paid for MalWareBytes and MSE is free. McAfee and Symantec are both useless, IMHO....

Wooo Hooo Ran the quick scan of MalWareBytes, it found 5 objects. I just said remove, rebooted it and the popups appear to be gone.

Cool. Keep Malwarebytes on there and do a full scan at least every two weeks (weekly is better). You can't eliminate that stuff, but you can get rid of it before it becomes a huge problem...

The WinAntiVirus (aka WinFixer) series gets by AV programs.

I just did this on a Win 7 machine.
Google Win 7 2012 Security or similar. It is too early for me to think straight. There is a post on a web site Call Bleeping Computers. Not certain if they have this for Vista or not but I understand Win 7 and Vista share a bunch of similarities. There are three steps to removing this SOB - all freeware. If you want a temporary relief, go to a previous time via your control panel. You will either need to do this or use a second PC. Good luck. It took over an hour to remove this virus but that puppy is GONE! Larry |

Not all malware will be caught by any A/V program, but so far, in my testing, the MSE does much better than ESET, Symantec (Norton), McAfee and many of the others out there. It's free and updates itself, which is a big plus in my book...

This thread reminded me that I had not run MalWareBytes in a while. Scanned the entire computer and it found a trojan horse within a few minutes.
Its really a good idea to do this every week...

Joe,
Keep Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) running on your PC. Use MalWareBytes if you have to, to remove malware... Best bet is to prevent the malware from getting on your PC, rather than trying to remove it after the fact...
