Best music ever....
Back in the mid 60's I used to work on a dairy farm. The farmer used to turn the radio on in the barn. The music included the Beachboys, the Beatles, the Byrds, Bob Dylan etc etc etc. It kept us happy and the cows were happier ie. they let down their milk better. My challenge is this. Is there any better music since that time that makes 2 and 4 legged critters happier? Rap music? Thump thump music from big subwoofers would scare the heck out of the 4 legged critters? I must admit I am partial still to Bob Dylan, Ian Tyson(4 strong winds). Oh yes, Neil Diamond is great too.

No. At least 80% of the excellent music made in the past sixty years......was made before 1975. Even cows know that.

No doubt the most creative juices were flowing in the 60's through the 80's.....
Stuff nowadays - for the most part - is lacking creativity. The emphasis seems to be on the lyrics - not the music. That's why you see the TV commercials all use tunes from the past - because they had catchy tunes - not just lyrics. My desert island music is Led Zeppelin, FWIW. They were the best ever! ![]()

Traveling music from the past = Bob Seger
Years before Walkmans and Ipods, I mounted an am-fm, cassette player in the fairing of my mc and listened thru earbuds.....Played the same tapes over and over.

Couldn't agree more...I don't bother with the radio when driving. My Ipod is full of oldies...from Chuck Berry to the Beatles, Eagles, Stones, etc. Rock used to be fun.

Some friends recently visited Las Vegas and asked if there were any "G" rated shows to see with their 15 year old son. I immediately recommended "LOVE", an amazing show all about the Beatles. They said their son had never heard of the Beatles......
Surprised, sad, but it's a different world for kids now days I guess. They think Justin whatever and Lady Gaga is the best ever!

the problem isn't modern music...it's the modern music that you guys are listening to. there is a TON of awesome, highly technical, avant garde modern rock music today...just not on the radio. the average person listens to crap and expects it...none the wiser. you just have to find it

The music that we hear in our teens is generally what sticks for life. As Mike said, there is great music being made today, you just have to find it. On the more commercial side of things I find Coldplay to be on-par with some of the great bands from the 60's and 70's. Viva la Vida is a great album. There are plenty of more obscure artists as well. For instance if you haven't listened to Bela Fleck and the Flecktones...well, you should: Sex In A Pan (Live from Bonnaroo 2011) - YouTube
Most of the big "pop" music has always been crap. It wasn't different in the 60's or 70's - plenty of really bad stuff. I do however think that pop music as an art form peaked in the early/mid 70's though. There were songs that were produced to within an inch of their lives - strings, horns, crazy thick arrangements. Also pop radio was much more eclectic back then and if you listened to American Top 40 you could hear pop, rock, country, soul, etc. Metropole Orchestra, Vince Mendoza arranging and conducting. You can get the Jim Beard/Vince Mendoza album on iTunes. It is amazing. |

Did you happen to catch the live broadcast (radio margaritaville) from the Fillmore in MD NY's eve?

First Lowell, then Ritchie...sorry, LF is no more despite some great guys still making great music imo. One of my best friend's band opened for the Feat a few years back (outdoor venue)...as he was rockin' out on stage, there they were off to the side enjoying "his" moment in the sun just as much as he was. IMO, there is just as much great music being made today as there ever was, but you will NOT find it via most commercial outlets. In fact, I'd venture that the 20 somethings of today (having grown up with their parents' great taste in music) just ooze talent. I know quite a few of 'em, but they may never, ever have a "hit song" (whatever that is)

Does anyone still trade CD's? I was watching a history of metal show on VH1 (geez that makes me feel old...) over the weekend and, supposedly, that's how they got there music out, via copied cassettes. I assume this is all done via youtube, etc... now. |

Ahhhhh NO!....the reason why you hear the moldy oldies in Commercials is that the Demographic (age group) that has the Dinero are the old fks that grew up with and liked that muszak.

Wilco is a great band. their drummer is a powerhouse with incredible chops. he was an ex drum corps guy and his technical ability really shows. Air is a french duo that i like. their sound is completely unique. TV on the Radio...great band. "halfway home" is one of my favorite tracks. I like a lot of old music, too. big big fan of older jazz, latin jazz, etc. cal tjader, pancho sanchez, etc. usually i just go to the MP3 site, pick of genre of music, and listen, listen, listen.
