Car crash, BMW dangles off bridge
Bad accident just before commute home yesterday, one fatality, three saved by some quick thinking by the Seabees passing through. Emergency crews had a tough job on this one.

I'm in total amazement that there were no fatalities in the car.

Boy howdy on that...very fortunate that they were there transporting a fork lift!
Kudos to them!

Dang!
![]() Anyone know if the bridge is still closed? I was planning on going south through there this afternoon.

You can get up to date info on the CHP website, but I'd plan a detour as an alternate.

I will look for an alternate route in case it looks like southbound is also backed up.

Alternate route is Hwy 154, two lanes with few passing lanes, but it will be crowded on a three day weekend. I travel this route everyday, very scenic but crazy drivers at times. |

The traffic through there is very fast - especially just north of the Gaviota tunnel. I am always on high alert through there.
Can anyone make out the the BMW model?

Thanks. Sounds like I should be good with my usual route (101 all the way from San Luis Obispo to Thousand Oaks).

Wow, seeing about 75 feet of concrete pillars taken out just stuns me when I remember that those people lived. I can't imagine the energy dissipated in that event. And the extra spectacle of a big-rig careening off the road and bursting into flame. Sounds like a movie.
That turn is pretty tricky for the highway, though. Descending, somewhat sharp radius, narrow bridge, a bumpy transition from grippy asphalt to more slippery concrete... I always need both hands on the wheel and on high alert when I go through there.

Looks like an E46 3-series. Talk about lucky, first they weren't killed in the accident then the passing Seabees happen to have a boom lift. Somebody was watching over them.

I just read this story in our local news paper. They NEVER even mentioned the SeaBees being there or helping out. I guess thats why they call our Mercury News the "Murky News"

Amazing the family survived, RIP the truck driver. The TV news said he rear ended the BMW. I don't know the area. Wonder if he came upon a line of cars stopped, the BMW driver cut in front of him, could have been a number of things that caused it I guess. They said the baby was basically unhurt and saved by the car seat. Seems like the important part of the car held up very well.

That bridge gets narrow and the turn is relatively sharp for a freeway. Combined with the unsettling bumps the truck driver probably just wasn't paying enough attention and drifted over into the left lane and tagged the Bimmer.
