Perhaps not. Maybe the whole sex scandal was something Paterno went through in order to bring someone (Sandusky) to justice, and it was his way of dealing with the guilt of a cover-up for so long. Maybe he was behind the series of events which occurred last year...

Just sayin'

Yes. And if you live each day as though it's your last, eventually you will be right. I prefer to live everyday as though it's July 14th, 1967.

In retrospect I feel it was easy for me to minimize Joe Pa's impact in wake of the scandal.....

He had a life for all surrounding him to be quite proud of....

Alas, it's now a fact. Fox is reporting his passing...the passing of a legend.

with Joe Pa gone (RIP), things should now be focused on Sandusky and move quicker.

Negative. How many little boys did it take to run his football program? Honestly, I hope he died a painful death. Old SOB.

RIP Pappa Joe. His death was strangely similar to the way Bear Bryant passed away in that both died within a month or two after retiring.

Watching him in the pressbox those last few games sort of reminded me of "Weekend at Bernie's"

I have mixed emotions about this. I really liked and respected joe P. until the sex scandal. Just can't understand his thinking in not taking a more active position in bringing the issue to real closure, even at a cost to the University. It was within his power and control and he took the easier way out. Most likely at the expense of allowing injury to more young men. He had young men in mind all the time with the football program but how could he seemingly take the abuse scandal involving young men and not have their wellbeing in mind to the same degree he viewed his players.

If he had outed Sandusky the minute he learned about the child raping in the locker room he would have died a true legend. Unfortunately, everyone involved, including Paterno, suffered from clouded morality because of the big money the football program generates. Merely telling his superiors was not enough, he should have immediately outed the situation and suffered the short-term emotional upheaval of the scandal and the program would have recovered. "It's not the crime, it's the cover-up." The cover-up by Paterno, his staff, and the suits who run Penn State has left a permanent tarnish not only on Joe Paterno's legend but also on Penn State itself.

Really?

I don't remember Paul Bryant being forced into retirement in disgrace because he covered up the rape of children.

There it is.

He knew and then let Sandusky stay on at Second Mile. Horrible.

Yeah, but way to go when you have nothing to lose....few months from death. How long did he know he had cancer? Things line up a little too conveniently.

Bear Bryant retired. Wasn't forced to. He was 8-3 that last year and said his team deserved more than he was giving. He did die within a month but there was no dishonor or scandal there unlike uncle Joe.

I used to respect him. He was a successful coach and a complete failure as a human being by not protecting children. The net result is he was a bum.

How can anyone honor him? That would be placing higher regard for the sport rather than for common human decency.

I agree but piling on Paterno isn't going to wash away the fact that those boys were molested. It's not up to me to pass judgement.
