What is your biggest pet peeve of the mainstream media?

I'll start off with 3:

1) Hate when they interview "passersby" about a particular topic...who cares what some dOOd thinks as he's walking by? Most people on the street are clueless anyway....

2) Hate when the weather person spends a half minute (or more) rattling off every city's temperature within' a 100 mile radius when there'[s only a 3 degree difference between them all.

3) Hate when they show file footage during a storm...and don't label it as such. You see roofs being blown in the video from a storm that occurred years ago. :(

SNOWPOCALYPSE 2012!!!!!!!

REPORTER ON CORNER REPORTING THAT THERE ARE PUDDLES THAT GO ALL THE WAY TO THE CENTER OF THE STREET!!!! (and as you can see the water is up to my ankles!!!!)

WINTER STORM 2011!!!!!

VINMAN 01-24-2012 02:43 PM

1.Over sensationalization of a minor weather events.

2. Amount of time devoted to celebrities.

Fixed it for you.

Peeve? I haven't seen a whole network news broadcast for years. If I walk into the room where it's on, I can stand about 30 seconds and I'm outta there.

They're just actors acting solemnly. Here's the "news" and we're concerned, aren't you?

Nope.

cstreit 01-24-2012 03:22 PM

Mainstream media?

Well there's no journalism any more. What we typically see is that they have clearly come to a conclusion and use opinion and carefully teased out "facts" to support it.

R K T 01-24-2012 03:29 PM

Can't stand watching the news. Seems like they have to sensationalize everything to get ratings so they can sell ad time. Even the weather.....BREAKING NEWS! Rain....1/4 inch so far....When will it ever end?

RonDent 01-24-2012 03:36 PM

Fox News. Any of it. All of it. Then again, can you really call it the News?

Baz 01-24-2012 03:37 PM

I just thought of 2 more VERY ANNOYING ones.....

4) That ridiculous crawler that runs along the bottom of the screen. Please - give me a break. I'd like to watch specifically just what is on....NOT what you consider to be "breaking news".....

5) Hate when they use the phrase "What YOU need to know." when referring to the news broadcast....I'll be the judge of what I need to know!

Hey Ron - thanks for responding but let's keep this out of PARF.

Look at my examples for what we're looking for in the thread.

Thanks! ;)

Sensationalization of the story whatever it is - weather, cat in a tree, armageddon - just tell me the facts and let me decide how important it is.

The phrases "We report, you decide," and "Fair and balanced" by the same network. You report, I'll decide whether it's fair and balanced or not.

RonDent 01-24-2012 04:01 PM

OK Baz,
What Patrick said!

azasadny 01-24-2012 04:58 PM

I hate it when they say "the man, he..." or "the woman, she...", "the people, they..."

Why do they repeat the subject? We already know who the subject is, why the repeat? The news media, they are driving me crazy!

Its all about entertainment these days...

H.G.P. 01-24-2012 05:59 PM

Soviet Monopolization

They're all bailout babies and propaganda for the Eastern Fairfax-New York-Conn & Mass. Soviets. Never listen to them. (I even "mute" the sports...almost totally)

That. I stopped subscribing to the newspaper after I realized it was mostly an editorial, passed off as unbiased journalism. Those news magazines are no different.

That, and the "Storm of the Century" .... that happens every frickin' year.

However, I'm all for the recent proliferation of hot weather girls!

YOUR LIFE COULD BE IN DANGER RIGHT THIS VERY MINUTE!!!!!!!!!

Story at 11 after "Prancing with Hollywoods' D-listers"

Gretch 01-24-2012 06:21 PM

I dunno. That they are lying, manipulating selfish self serving a-holes........

Yep, that is it.

varmint 01-24-2012 07:04 PM

"news" programs that are 50% horse race poll coverage, 40% drama criticism of candidates performance, and 10% discussion of issues.
