Best way to ship a car cross country ?

I'm close to working out a deal with Chocaholic on his '49 Pickup but I live in the PRK (Kalifornia) and he is in Georgia. I just tested a few shippers and found they are over $2K...yeah...what did I expect...

Any suggestions ?

That is one neat truck!

Round up a buddy, get the camping gear together together, major road trip.

Wait its winter, its a long way at 50MPH and you could get snowbound at many points along the way.

Maybe shipping it is the way to go.

Still it will be great to have in your garage!

Cheers Richard

Hi Richard,

Yeah, I hope to work this out. I'm wondering if any rent-able trucks (U-haul, Penski) could carry the thing. I would fly back and drive it home. Easily just as expensive but lotta fun

You've first got to decide whether you want it transported in an enclosed trailer or not. Enclosed is at least double the cost, but also is typically handled more carefully.

I've shipped thousands of cars cross country in open transports (10-car semi haulers) and only had minor damage twice. It should be about a grand from GA to CA.

If you're not in a hurry, also consider shipping it via rail. It will be your least expensive option.

I *might* consider buying a new enclosed trailer in Georgia and delivering your truck in my new trailer in California on December 1st or 2nd. I've got a couple reasons to be in CA on the 3rd and 4th.

Yep, it would be a hit towing that across the farming states of the midwest. Probably find yourself getting offers at each gas stop.

I did forward the posting to a friend that has been lusting for that model cheby for some time. Just for his entertainment, I don't think he is ready to go for it.

Hope this works out for you.

Cheers Richard

She's tucked away safely in the garage in the background! Going to be 70 and sunny tomorrow, so she'll likely get her legs stretched a bit....ran out of time today. I agree though....with a top speed around 50, and on bias ply tires, it could be an interesting experience going cross country. Vacuum powered wipers are pretty wimpy against a driving rain or snow!

and here's one from the day she arrived...

I suspect that SC will go soon. No more autocrosses for Mark once he finds out what a long-throw double clutch shifter feels like!

I never track or AX my car. I'm sure that baby would love radial tires. Double clutch shifter ? Yikes

There was a guy who rented a U Haul trailer and took his 912 from Chicago to Florida in Winter. He literally wrapped the 912 in cling wrap & tape. It worked well IIRC. I think the thread is on tech. I know the truck is much bigger but the cost would not be thousands if there's a UHaul trailer place near you.

You know I had once thought of a similar thing but I was gonna use bubble wrap. I bet it would be fine and no one on the road could even tell what was under it

I don't see the need to wrap the vehicle in anything if hauling by Uhaul.... Secure just like you would in any other trailer....

I don't think you can get a U-haul enclosed trailer for a car... we were talking about an open trailer. I have not checked with them or Penske yet though.

Watch out for U-Ship. There are a lot of fly by nighters on there and numerous crooks such as Kurt who took me for $12k...

Yes, I am sure there are flakey players in that 'company'. One just has to research who you are deciding on to do the job. As for me, I'm still hoping to find a way to do the job myself even if I have to wait til Spring.

Thanks Joe. Not a done deal yet cuz my P car is still unsold. I have about 25 'watchers' but those usually just watch and don't bid or buy. Guess I'm asking too much and it's not a very popular color.

That said, Mike is being very helpful in that he does not need to move it out soon at all and I have time on my side. He is one helluva nice guy...
