Wow, that's a cool story about how you got the kit.

I bet it sounds incredible with such a unique combination of woods.

Beautiful kit, thanks for sharing the story. Can you post some close ups pics? I'd love to see some of the details, especially the grain.

Been a while.....

I took the 911 out for a run today while the weather was decent(above 35degrees) and visited my local independant drum shop to see what they had new. The owner talked me into trying an Evans kick drum batter head that has foam rings of different sizes. The Ludwig Rocker Silver Dot had probably been on the drum for 20 years. I had also used a pillow and rolled up towel for muffling.

At his suggestion, I installed the new head with no muffling at first. Holy cow, it made the drum just punchier than all get out!! I run the batter head with very little tension as I like to have a good "attack" from the plastic beaters. I tried the muffle rings and ended up using the thinnest version which keeps the bottom without losing projection. Iwas so inspired that I ended up recording a couple of videos just so I could hear how it sounded out front.

Updated pics.

I installed Evans front and batter side kick drum heads. They are incredible!!!

Also purchased a 10 inch Zildjian Xtra thin splash and an 8 inch Zildjian Splash last week. I mounted the the 8 inch splash upside down on top of my cheap 12 inch China for a trashy, short decay accent cymbal stack.

I'm looking for a <10" splash...haven't really found what I want at the music store. I want a quick decay but a high burst up front. Any ideas?

I was looking for the same thing about 10 years ago and I found the Sabian AA to be exactly what I was looking for. It's the only cymbal I've ever owned that IS NOT a Zildjian.

Is it me or do any of you guys dislike the ride cyms? I ride on the high hat mostly, seems like anything else just produces to much ring. Maybe its my Zs or something. That said I've been using tenor mallets and actually really like the strike and sound on non-muffled, two headed drums. Gives a richers tone IMO and crashes arn't as 'bitey'. Just my style I guess but I always thought drums should and could be more melodic.

I love my Zildjian ride and I ALWAYS use stick with nylon tips to get a clearer "ping" from them. My Zildjians are all at least 30 years old, and they get better with age...

I use wood tip sticks. My 20 inch Zildjian Earth Ride is drier than Arizona in the summer. I bought it to cut through the guitars and it worked great. I get virtually no "wash" or overtones.

As far as the splash you seek---try an extra thin version. The one I just bought has great initial "splash" and almost instant decay.

rmw--who had an arbiter snare? I know I don't.

I did stop by my drum shop today to use a gift certificate my wife got me for Father's Day. Ordered a new Zildjian t-shirt.

He has an awesome Bonham tribute kit by Ludwig in chrome over metal, complete with Paiste cymbals like Bonzo used. slobberrrrr

I don't think Art posts on here anymore, but I found his old post interesting. I have played and listened to a lot of Zildjian cymbals over the years and the older cymbals have a definite edge over the newer ones. I had a friend who claimed his Zildjian K's sounded better when cigarette smoke from clubbing got in the grooves. His cymbals did sound great but reeked heavily of smoke. I couldn't stand to be near them they stunk so bad. He still hasn't cleaned them.
