Conspiracy of Science - Earth is in fact growing

Pretty cool theory.

Worth 10 minutes.

Interesting indeed.

the theory raises the question of how does the process of expansion occur and is it the affect of earths rotation and or change in magnetic fields?. How does a finite mass increase in volume? thickening of the earths crust, cooling magmas inclusion of air pockets?

any geophysicists have a simpletons explanation?

Its not the the Earth is expanding rather that the rest of the universe is getting smaller....at least that is my theory as to why I need larger pants now.

How can the earth expand. Everyone knows it is flat!

I'm a geologist, and that is the funniest thing I've seen in a long time. What a bunch of nonsense. Wow. The guy who made the video must have a really good tinfoil hat.

Two things I noticed: He shows that 180 million years ago, the continents all fit so nicely together, that there were no oceans. Right.

Second: If the earth expanded that much over such a geologically short period of time, the density of the mantle would probably decrease enough to allow gasses in the magma to come out of solution, and volcanism would go crazy. Like opening a soda bottle. The earth would explode.

ooo since yer a geologist Charlie, how much is the Earth actually gaining mass annually via meteorites/comet debris/whatnot?

Approximately 50,000 tons every year, or 5X10^4 tons per annum. The earth weighs about 6.585X10^21 tons. Therefore, the percentage increase every year is 7.593^-21 percent. Or, 0.0000000000000000000007593%. Let's see, in order to increase the earth's mass by 1%, it would take 1.317X10^17 years. The earth is about 4.54X10^9 years old, so I guess the extra mass must come from somewhere else. As a matter of fact, the universe is only 3.8X10^10 years old.

Well if we keep digging holes and piling it up on top of the ground the earth will keep getting bigger. ...untill there is so much gravity we will all collapse under our own weight into puddles of jelly.

STOP GLOBAL ENLARGING!!

(Hey, I can make a few million off of that if I can get some kids from Berkley to believe spread the word!)

If we get on top of this, we can form the earth into a different shape over the course of a few billion years. I vote we make a giant Playboy symbol.

So, the earth is getting bigger... that explains why we are all fat now! We're getting bigger at the same time!

Conservation of matter. For us to be fatter, someone needs to be thinner. We're making them starve!!

The video is FOS. Lots of made up crap in it.

The earth gains mass at a very slow rate due to meteoroids etc. But the earth's core is also cooling, so it is shrinking in volume.
AND THAT DIDN'T COST THE TAXPAYERS A PENNY!

How do you know that the core is cooling? I thought it was getting warmer.

The core is staying very hot due to radioactivity, but it is cooling very slowly. Since Mars is much smaller, it has cooled more and the crust is thicker. The thicker crust does not allow for plate tectonics on Mars. That's why there's no plate tectonics on Mars.
