2004 Audi Allroad Quattro 2.7T

Looking at a 2004 Audi Allroad Quattro 2.7T (104k miles). Anyone have experience with this car? I've read some horrible reviews and a lot of glowing reviews.

Thoughts? Advice? Questions I should ask?

That bad eh?

Other option is a 2001 4Runner.

Good luck, the typical PPOT crowd hates Audi. (At least older, out of warranty, Audi)

I'd go for the 4Runner.... I've put more miles on my Corolla, than we managed to get out of three VAG products....

I love driving them, but the damned things like to break...

There are several love/hate issues with an Allroad. I strongly suggest validating that the previous owner had proper maintenance records (preferably by the dealer) and religiously serviced this thing. Also verify, if possible, the previous owner's driving style. The biggest Allroad issues I know of are bad turbos, front suspension mechanical issues, active suspension malfunctions, and top-end valve train problems. All of these come from a combination of deferred maintenance and driving style.

It can be a difficult car for the DIY due to how tight it is packed. (I think that any of the 2.7 dual-turbo engines fall in this category.) There are also a fair number of special tools required that are difficult to improvise.

Just to cast my dissenting opinion into the fray, we have had a great experience with our 02 A4 Quattro. Not an Allroad 'cause I detest SUVs & their ilk. We plan to replace it with another this year or next.

Our experience with that Bavarian product was the opposite of the typical PPOT lovefest with costs exceeding the Audi by far. Note: I don't work on it at all.

Add cam chain tensioner leaks, had mine done several times. Also noisy blower motors, and the dreaded 55 mph wobble from the front CV's. You can spend some serious bucks getting the wobble fixed. Was a fun car though, however I only owned mine for a short time after the warranty was up.

The 4.2's are rarer and only come with an auto box.

There are a few conversions out there, but it's a massive amount of work and parts.

Run away!!! There's a reason why they are dirt cheap. If you want an Audi Avant buy a regular (non 2.7T) A6 or A4, they have their issues but are much more reliable.
