Heat or ice for my lower back?

Experienced pain on my lower back while brushing my teeth this morning. It brought me to my knees, crawling on my hands and feet back to bed. On call nurse said take ibuprofen and rest it but didn't mention icing or heat. Shouldn't I do one or the other though?

vash 01-31-2012 10:50 AM

man. how hard do you brush?

:) hope you feel better.

That's the same question wifey asked. Just woke up stiff and bent down kinda funny is all. Must be getting old. Staying home from work today.

Time.

What is the "ticker" and how come it's static??

12own911 01-31-2012 11:07 AM

My chiro says to apply ice... 15 minutes on / 15 minutes off for a few hours. My inner chiro says to apply heat...

My inner chiro always wins over the real doctor.

Bad, I know.

My inner chiro says wine, and lots of it. He thinks that's the cure for everything, and he always wins.

Ice now, heat later.

Ice reduces inflammation, heat promotes blood flow for healing.

Did you hear of feel a click or clunk when it happened?

Good luck.

So now we're calling it brushing our teeth, are we? What position was your wife in when this happened?

cantdrv55 01-31-2012 11:19 AM

I like the wine idea. I always listen to my inner chiro as well. I heard or felt a pop. Could just be my bones cracking?

The ticker is stuck because I don't know how to update it and forgot the password for the account. I'll remove from my sig. Not much change anyway - bouncing around 210 - 215.

Someone was gonna ask sooner or later. I wish that was the cause :)

Good luck. My last lower back issue went on for 6 weeks. I would add muscle relaxants & wash them down with the wine already prescribed.

Hopefully just a disc slippage.

Once you get more comfortable, laying on your back, using your arms bring 1 leg up in a bent position and slowly pull towards your chest. The other leg is laying straight. Alternate legs. At any time if you feel increased pain, STOP.

Look at my x-ray. That should cheer you up.

Ice. I often have lower back issues. My chiro says ICE.

And the only thing I have found to truly take away pain is........

VODKA!

The drugs they gave me after a serious hernia operation did not work. VODKA did. Thank GOD for VODKA!

Mix the Vodka with some Vicadin and you are on your way to recovery!

I have found that some decent rest for a couple of days followed by some mild stretching to take pressure off the spine seems to work.

Swimming in a cold pool helps me as well.

cantdrv55 01-31-2012 12:39 PM

Thanks gal and guys. So wine, vodka, Vicodin, stretching, ice and swim in a cold pool. I'll be a drunken, drugged up fool with shriveled you-know-whats in no time.

12own911 01-31-2012 12:41 PM

Then add heat after the swim to get the blood flowing again.

Only if you have a newer formulation with lower acetominophen amounts. While opiate/alcohol is a dangerous mix, alcohol/acetominophen is as bad or worse.

The above has no warranty implied or expressed. I am not an MD nor did I sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
