Station Wagon mpg and towing riddle

Without being too long winded I'm thinning the herd. Sold my SC and now have 2005 MDX, 92 Saab 9000s and track SC. I need to have something capable of towing a light trailer and Formula Vee. The total weight is probably 1,500 lbs. I drive a fair bit for work and the MDX mileage does not work for that. It does work great for snow, longer trips, etc.

The MDX is coming up on 100k, needs struts, bushings and will need timing belt service soon. The Saab has 120k, is a great dd, 25+ mpg but I'm concerned with longer term ownership. The track car is a beast, not for dd duty. I'd like to get down to 2 cars.

So, is there a wagon out there that will get 30mpg and tow the trailer? I've seen lots of different info on the TDI sportwagon and towing capability. I like the idea of the VW having a 6 speed manual option. Many forum responses say that VW does not sell towing accessories and towing may void warranty. Subarus aren't known to be the best with mileage. Under this option where the wagon is the dd I'd keep my 911 for track duty.

Another option is to put some $'s in to the MDX, sell the Saab and SC and get a Miata or something similar for DD duty and occasional track days. Most of my track time is now spent in the race car.

Opinions, other options to consider?

I'm confused...while you may come close with towing the 1500 lb FV, youre looking at min of 4000 lbs for an SC on a trailer. I doubt you can come up with something in your parameters for towing the SC.

I don't need to tow the SC to the track. It is street legal, just not to street friendly.

Oh...OK. I get it. New probably a VW Jetta wagon is gonna be close...although you might get a deal on a new saab. Used...I'd go for a BMW 525ti. I have an 'o3 that I love but I don't tow woith it. I honestly feel the 5 series wagons handle better than the sedan counterpart.

Although VW does not offer the trailer hitch as a factory option, the dealer would probably be happy to add the hitch.

Here's one with a gross trailer weight rating of 2000 lbs. for $180.
