I love that most of the guys that are holier than thou about social media are simeltaneously some of the most prolific posters on the board.

Same end, different means.

When I was a self employed consultant I tried to get my name out as much as possible. Since I know longer do that for a living, I don't want to reach out to market myself.

Despite the fact that I have 6000 some posts here, I'm not big on the other things. My wife teased me that she was "married to nobody" on Facebook since I don't have an account. I have LinkedIn, and I periodically read what other people are doing, but have little to say myself. I have twitter, but I don't have anyone following me. I follow things like race teams and tracks so I get their information. Hands down, Pelican my local forum re the big time wasters....I have thought about walking away for a while, but I can never do it. My wife got me an iPad for Christmas, so at least I can spend time on the couch with her watching tv and surfing than in the other room where the computer is.

As a "middle aged" person with a couple kids I have a very limited set of people I interact with on a regular basis. I'm sort of stuck in my little circle....I can imagine what all these people are talkin g to each other on social media all time about.

Drop Facebook, Twitter, E-mails and Cell Phones (non-business related) and go back to letter writing...hmmm.
I don't do facebook.
I don't do twitter.
About the only e-mails i get that are not work related or spam are from my elected officials or notifications i have a PM on pelican.

I send less than a dozen e-mails a year that are not work related or to my elected officials. Wouldn't take much to give up that.

I carry a cell phone for emergencies only. I MIGHT use 5 minutes a month at the most. I have NEVER sent a text! It costs me 25 cents for every text received or sent, so whenever I get one I delete it immediately and CALL the sender and tell them don't do that again, we're not teenage girls.

Yes, it would be easy to give up cell phones too.

So what you're talking about should really be no big deal, at least not for men.

Now, if you're talking about giving up PPOT, that would be a little harder.
Still do-able but would take a little effort.

I have made some re-aquantences with Facebook but frankly it is pretty much a waste. This place is a playground. Such a departure from reality. I'm not nearly the lunatic prick in person...

I have never had a social media account. I do LinkedIn but only because I feel I have to, so I can keep up with contacts easier. I very much like my privacy and would not enjoy old high school or college people find me, without me looking for them. I have a problem with much of the internet moving over to FB where you can't freely access it without signing up with your real life name.

I have enjoyed forums for all my hobby interest since the old majordomo email list days! This would be the toughest to quit aside from the news, search engines and Wikipedia, where I get a lot of my ever changing questions and interests answered.

I also dropped my smart phone in the water and went back to a basic flip phone. I love it!

Facebook fans...be prepared to be bombarded by political messages as the election nears.

Technology is going to be the demise of the written word. Check out most teens handwriting these days. Looks like a four year olds' from 35-40 years ago when holding a biro was natural.

Prepare? It's already happening!

Social Media.........

Basically don't do any of it. There is too much opportunity for the wrong person to do one harm there. This board is "IT" for me. If I need to "talk" to someone I can pick up a phone or send a private email or text. Nuff said.

944Larry 02-06-2012 07:01 AM

I don't do Facebook or any of that stuff. Still use a flip phone. Don't get that many e-mails any more either. Don't forward any of that goofy crap you get every day. Still forward the good ones though. Pelican is the only thing I do daily. And when work hours get long I don't always catch it. It's not age, I found I was wasting too much time so I just do the basics or (in the case of Pelican) the necessities.

There, fixed it for ya

Eric,
Katrina is impressed with you! Nothing but great things to say. if your single and 6'3" you prolly have a great shot!!!

GH85Carrera 02-06-2012 07:20 AM

I could do it. I don't tweet. I send a only few texts per month. Most of my texts are to a friend I eat lunch with one a week. A simple one line confirmation that I will be there. No real conversation.

I have a Facebook account that I check about once a month when I remember.

I use my cell phone more as an organizer and camera than I do as a phone. I am NOT one of the folks that think my car will not run if I am not on the phone. I use the GPS function on my cell phone on occasion but not while I am moving.

flipper35 02-06-2012 08:02 AM

I don't have a Facebook or Twitter account. I use a flip phone still since all I need a phone for is to make calls and I evidently don't check email often enough since when I did check last night I have roughly 1000 unread. I use the internet for work (VPN when on call) and catching up on some shows on Hulu. I don't generally play any games online, but do host LAN parties now and then which is a huge social event for us :).

Damn, Lubey, I'm only 6'2" so there goes that idea!! She's a very nice girl, I've enjoyed working with her. We've both been so busy that connecting has been difficult. It's on my priority list today!

Easy to stay off Parf...Of course, Tabby & Randy will try to sneak some on here, but they usually get moved.

Mark Henry 02-06-2012 09:49 AM

My wife, daughter and MIL have been trying to connect with the other girls in the family, once a month they have a girls night out. We're talking out to dinner for 2-3 hours. She's b_tching that two of the mothers and all of the kids (except ours and one cousin) have their face buried in these texting devices. She finds it is totally rude that they cannot turn the dang things off for such a short period of time.

She had it out with one niece (with the dad sitting there giving the nod) just the other night and is making an ultimatum to the others, check the tech at the door or don't bother coming.
The thing that gets me is the parents being just as bad and enabling this type of anti-social behaviour.

Jim727 02-06-2012 11:46 AM

No problem for me. I don't do any social media, particularly since people like Zuckerberg have absolutely no respect for a person's privacy. Cell phone is normally in a drawer turned off. I even dropped off this board for two years because of too much work. Now that I'm back I'm planning to avoid parf and enjoy this great place -- with perspective.

Besides, I'm planning to spend more time working on the 911, and what better place to stay dialed in than Pelican?

azasadny 02-06-2012 03:52 PM

In May, I'll mark my 2nd anniversary off FaceBook. I hated that thing and I do not miss it at all...
