Well, it is a tool for work, and as soon as I am not a partner in any business or owner I'll become a hermit..

My father was in the Air Force so we moved a lot and I really have no childhood lifelong friends but I have been able to make contact with some people from HS and of course college. These are people who I have not seen or spoken to in 40 years. Great to hear how their lives have turned out after all those years.

Same for me. It's great hookin back up and talking with friends I grew up with, that I've lost contact with. Weve had a few great reunions and get togethers.

Other than that I dont use it to update my daily happenings evey 5 mins like some poeple do.

I have been heavily influenced by the film "Alone in the Wilderness". The older I get the more I understand that man's need for isolation from the BS. This and 1 other forum are my only online social places. I understand FB etc for networking for business purposes. But they really are for silly people otherwise.
This is the best place for "brains" as far as I am concerned.

Facebook, and now Google, are pushing to make the internet un-anonymous.
Why should your employer, your clientel, friends/family, and the governement be able to track what you do on-line, who your friends are, what you communicate, what your personal habits and interests are, and what political beliefs someone holds? That is reserved for the voting booth.

"Log into Facebook using your personal email password"?
Sorry, you have to be f'n kidding me.

Facebook acknowledges deleted photos not removed for up to three years | Hot Topics | an SFGate.com blog
"The site reports that even a photo of a naked toddler, deleted in May of 2008, is still visible as of 2012."

A friend asked me if I twittered (I don't, it is annoying how goes off every 5 minutes to someone she follows post:mad:) I told her, sure, every time I take a Dump, O post, and acted surprised that she didn't follow my "Dump Tweets":p.
Not sure if she really knows that I was kidding.. One positive thing on fb is when I need to post pix of cars or parts for someone, I can be at the Farm or warehouse or the shop, I can take a picture with my phone & post it on line right then, that I like.. Course, as I said, when I have no parts left to sell or trade & have my cars are finished & other business interest are gone, I will be logged out and and relax.

FB is useful as a marketing tool. I have little/no interest in connecting with old friends and thankfully I can count on one hand the number of people from my past I've re-encountered on FB. But for keeping up with other musicians and promoting gigs? Very useful.

I don't tweet or follow anyone. I have one other online community that I participate in.

"Always on" has ramifications we still don't yet understand. The whole digital/analog clash has second and third order effects that have not shown themselves yet. But they will.

Photos "deleted" are not deleted. Only the link to the photo is removed. I expect that the removal that does take place is based on the last time the file is accessed. If not accessed for some time, it is removed.

Other social sites have similar issues...

john70t 02-07-2012 12:22 PM

I just "permanently deleted" my FB account.
1). It first sent me into a password<->recaptcha loop. The page would just re-load itself before I could finish typing.

2). I then went to "My Wall" in order to share my Facebook experience with others.:)
That page froze while entering text.:(

3). I pressed "back" in the javascript pop-up navigation, and a completely different "Permanently delete my account" page popped up.
How intuitive...

I made a mistake when signing up. I used the same email address as Pelican Parts. Facebook employees can continue their cyber-stalking of what I post online. Additionally, since they have my true name and location, they can also cyber-stalk(or just plain stalk) in a variety of other ways.
My friend Facebook, the stalker.

Could I? Should I? Yes and yes!

I would love to go Amish! Or more likely move to a tropical island with no cell coverage and live off fish I caught and fruit that grows wild in the jungle.

But this whole stupid "life" thing messes everything up... 99% sure wife would not go for it.

Only "social media" I do is FB and while is is cool for catching up with old friends and family it is losing it shine = wife " you haven't been on FB much lately" um, yeah... because I don't care what my old high school buddy had for lunch.

I don't have a smart phone... now that prices are dropping ($50) I am thinking about it... but then find myself thinking "I made it this far without one do I really need it?

Currently don't have Internet at home... but when wife moves in I'm pretty sure that will change.

My nephew joined the local county popo about a year ago. Started as a jailor and has now moved up to patrolman. When he was promoted, he was 'advised' to remove his facebook account for his safety as well as being 'more' professional

That's a load of bollocks, if you set the security and privacy settings up properly, and only add people you know and trust. ...
There's no reason why a popo would be less safe or professional for having FB.

The problem is people who think adding friends is a contest and more is better.
And then leave everything open, including foto's , posts and then post every stupid thing they do.

I usually have less then 40 folks on there, no co-workers, security is set so nothing is visible to those that aren't friends with. And NO stupid FB apps either.

I literally quit it all yesterday. FB, Twitter....I was not big on them, nor a heavy user at all. I was on twitter to follow news etc, but just like FB, they started this algorithm thing where feed preference changes. For example, I see an 8 hours old news before something just happened, because they think I would prefer that way. No way around it. I quit FB for that now twitter on that game. -removed-. I deleted both of the accounts.

Also made a decision to close company accounts too. Here is why. Only 10% of the followers see your post unless you sponsor the post, which means you pay for it. F U C K that also. People will find you if they need you. Period.

Next is Instagram. Which is the worst.

It isn't hard.

I'm 24. No facebook, no twitter, no instagram. I have Linkedin. I'm also not a recluse....

wdfifteen 03-20-2016 06:58 PM

My company does all that stuff. I have a content manager who deals with it. But on a personal level, PPOT is as close to social media as I get. I have a facebook account but I don't know how to use it. I've never done twidder or instygraham.

LeeH 03-20-2016 09:14 PM

Nice threadsurrection.

Living on the opposite coast from where I was born, my family uses Facebook to keep in touch. Nice to be able to post a pic and know everyone will see it. Lots of old friends there too.

Also, in our small part of Phoenix, we have a couple of local pages. I've met way more neighbors via those FB pages than I have in other ways.

But wouldn't this place be Social Media?

look 171 03-20-2016 10:23 PM

Many of us have been there before so its not a big deal. For a 20 something I bet, its hell but for us seasoned folks, its a lot easier. I come here almost daily, usually in the wee hours of the evening for some cheap and dirty chit chat or as I wait for the city inspector if there's internet connection. I am also over on one other forum almost daily, that's it. Just cell phone and email. I text 5-10 times daily at most. I rather yell at someone then have to type in caps. I make myself a promise, after 50, I like to cut email communications with friends to only one or two lines and no more then that. AS it is not, I only get one or two weekly. That's enough.

Oh, I don't have any of that social media stuff. No FB, Twitter, whatever.

island911 03-20-2016 10:35 PM

"But wouldn't this place be Social Media?

Whaaat...

n'No, this is anti-social media. :)

So, here's a random pic.
