The Grossness of Dogs...

Gross in human terms but a delicacy in the canine world. Yesterday a Mourning Dove nest fell from an eve on my patio. The resulting nest tip produced 2 broken eggs on my patio with very partially developed chicks. By Daughters 'Chiweenie" made a Bee-line to it and scuffed it down shells and all. None the worse for wear. I witnessed it and didn't bother to stop it mainly because of the speed at which she moved and partially because of her ability to completely clean the mess means I didn't have to. Hmmmm well, she has been know to eat small lizards and spiders without harm.

The this AM, while walking my Choco Lab, I noticed he sniffed out something and then began scuffing something down. I held his mouth open and began pulling out what I can only describe as either a very very long worm or the intestines of an undisclosed animal. It was organic and not man made and had enough physical integrity to be partially pulled from his gullet but not strong enough to bind a parcel. Perhaps I should have examined the part I was able to pull out but frankly I felt a shot of bile well up in my mouth and quickly moved on.

That was an hour ago - he is now busy licking his man-dog junk and keeping watch out my home office window for any trespasser that ventures to where he thinks is his territory which is pretty much anything in his field of vision. he to is none the worse for wear....

Dogs.

Our male dachshund "treed" a mouse behind the rain barrel. He could not quite get to the mouse and I did not want the mouse alive. There was no easy way to kill the mouse without causing possible damage to the rain barrel or the bricks of the house. I just used a long metal bar to flip the mouse out of his spot and toward the dog.

He was happy to take care of mister mouse.

Sally our old black lab has been gone 3 years now. In her later years she would wake me up to go potty(poop) in the middle of a winter night. A few hours later she would wake me up again to go consume her frozen dessert(recycled dogfood). I soon wised up and allowed her to go out only once a night. Kisses were never the same after that.....

My in-laws have 2 Puggles (Beagle-Pug mix), likely the most useless and void of intelligence dog I've ever experienced.

From their eating habits, I consider them one of the world's greatest recyclers...

Feasting on it. Every time they go outside, they find it, graze the yard for it and sit and eat it until it's all gone. The female eats it as it's being produced by her canine brother or my dog (who is not too fond of the practice)

Nigel, my Rottie-mutt, likes to eat dead stuff. The grossest was a rotting seagull corpse on the banks of the Hudson river. Stinky, slimy, and falling to pieces. Took a lot to get him to drop that thing. Then there was the time he grabbed a dead cat from the side of the road. I was screaming at him to drop it when I realized I was across the street from the local diner...it was Sunday AM and patrons were lined up for breakfast. A woman ran across the street towards us yelling "Oh My God!" - I quickly realized what she was thinking and said "lady, this cat was already dead when he found it, I swear"

love him...even though he can be a real @$$hole sometimes

if smell is associated to taste in anyway, and dogs have an incredible nose, maybe they know something we don't...imagine the total freedom?

What is funny is dogs will eat stinky horrible stuff and then turn their noses up at dog food put in the clean bowl. There is no such thing as a finicky dog or cat. Just one that is not hungry enough.

my cowboy was a garbage disposal.

during the spring melt tiny dead things that had been under the snow for months would surface. he'd eat them like candy.

lived almost seventeen years and healthy right up till the end.

have to be careful at the beach because my t-rex loves to roll in rotting fish carcasses. she will get on her back and do the full tina turner booty shake in a dead salmon.

the new dog, chaos, is really into public ball licking. he has to have an audience.

That is nothing, I had a German Shorthair that would eat poop while it is still coming out of the other dog's butt like some sort of nasty custard machine.

Who was the comedian who did the monologue about taking his dog to the Vet and complaining about his dog eating excrement. The Vet said he would give him something to put in the dog's food which would make the poo taste bad.
"Make the poo taste bad???"

We keep the cat boxes closed off from our dogs. On the other hand, there is a large pile of horse manure they love.
Sigh.

Best
