Who scripts the stuff that goes on inside your head at night?
I was thinking about this this morning laying in bed. I've had a run of extremely lucid dreams lately, and have had the opportunity to contemplate them in the morning... probably because I've been taking an hour or so to actually get out of bed lately.
Anyway... if you think about it, what's happening in your noggin is pretty amazing. You have a succession of dreams, each with its cast of characters, their dialogues, locations, emotions, physical sensations, etc. Its every bit as rich (if not more) than a Hollywood multi-million dollar production, which takes a cast of hundreds or thousands to pull off. Yet, your brain whips this stuff up every night, multiple times. I think that's pretty incredible. Makes you wonder how much time your mind actually takes to conjure it up... or maybe its instant, which is all kinds of awesome! Someday, we'll have a wireless transfer of the night's proceedings waiting for us on the laptop when we wake up for review. Cool! |
One dream I had a few years ago is the inspiration for a book I'm writing. Whether or not I attempt to get it published in another matter.
The only thing I recall about last night's dream is that in it I apparently forgot to crimp some .223 rounds and it was causing my rifle to jam as the bullets slipped into the cases and wouldn't feed properly...right as I was being overtaken by zombies. |
Oh, and I still have some dreams I clearly remember from when I was in kindergarten. I do have some re-occuring themes, but I'd hate to give the pop-psychologists more fodder.

My dreams are silent with black and white stick figures.

i want to produce into a short movie some of the dreams i've had. i got a couple of the recurring ones written down and filling in details as they happen again and again.

My understanding is your subconcious mind "works out" your stress, hope, fear, anxiety, fun times that your concious mind goes through all of your waking hours. It's the minds way of breaking down these things that seem to play like a short film to deal with or compartmentalize those experiences that really affect us. My $.02

I often have whatever is the opposite of a nightmare. Maybe a night-funny? Sometimes I wake up giggling.
|
I think you lose 90% of the memory within 10 minutes, so it has to be written down asap.
We usually have 3 REM cycles which are about 3 hours each. Dreams actually usually consist of combinations of known things in different configurations. I think it's a way for the brain to check it's wiring. Back in H.S., I'd wake from a dream 1-10 minutes before the dreaded alarm went off. |
I usually get really weird scenario's, like some kinda of bat **** crazy road trip, and my buddy for the road trip is a dude i know, and hated back in High School and haven't seen or heard off in 20 years. And in the dream, we seem to be getting along like super best friends forever!
The really funky ones, i get them when i'm feeling pretty good, and don't have any bad stress going on. I also got lucid dreams every once in a while, the "i'm superman" kinda movies, where nothing ever goes wrong.. and it it does, it doesn't affect me. Like missing the turn with the car, but missing the tree and finding another road on which i can keep driving.. Those are teh fun ones, when i the alarm goes off,i can snooze it, put my head down, and keep going in the same dream, full control where i go with it.. |
Couple nights ago I came around a corner very fast on my motorcycle... too fast... hit a red SUV head-on and went flying into the air, like 200 feet up. The sensation was so real. I've had many dreams of dying before, but I can usually realize its just a dream within a few seconds. This one totally fooled me. As I was flying through the air, feeling the violence, temperature change, wind, etc, I was totally convinced that this one was the real deal, and my life was over. I flew for perhaps 10 seconds, then realized it was a dream only after I had woken up, and was super pumped on adrenaline. Not many fool me, so this one's been bugging me for a few days.

I used to get the drowning ones.
Would bolt upright in bed and gasp for air. When I was young, 6 yrs old maybe, and I got sick I would have this recurring dream of being pushed/squeezed thru an ever narrowing tube. Hated that one. Always wonder if I was recalling being born. |
my grandfather's old friends used to dream elaborate plans for toys and games, wake up and jot it all down for later. I've seen many of his blueprints and drawings that were later sold to toy companies like Hasbro, Ideal, etc. interesting man with interesting stories. one of the survivors of the Indianaoplis sinking and all those sharks. he didn't talk about those dreams.

Try this one on...
In most of my dreams, I'm still 16. It doesn't make any sense. I recall going to college and having a job, but somehow I'm transported back. In many of them, I have to go back to high school or college because I never really graduated. All of my former classmates are still in high school or college too. I still live with my parents or in the dorm. My dad is still alive. Sometimes it's just me hanging out with my current friends. Lots of zombie dreams lately. I notice the inconsistencies almost immediately. I always recall an episode of the animated Batman show where he realizes he is in a dream because he can't read or write, and I read something and decide the dream must be real. Any dream that goes on long enough inevitably turns very dark. Most usually have someone chasing me and trying to kill me, usually my father. Sometimes it's a mystery and I have to figure out who is trying to kill me. I never do. Either way, I get away by flying. I fly by swimming the sidestroke. Sometimes I get caught in power lines. I usually wake up when I'm in mid-air. I'm usually sweating, heart thumping, and terrified when I wake up. I've been having this dream since I was 5. Oddly, it doesn't affect me much at this point. Having such a dream doesn't ruin my day, or make it better. I usually go back to bed and hope I dream about the cute chick at the office. |

Taking a stroll one hot summers day I came across a field of tall grass. I decided to lay down in the grass where I fell asleep. I began to dream that I was the star of a Hollywood movie, Hmm me a star of a Hollywood movie. That really blew my mind that me a long haired leaping gnome could be the star of a Holywoood movie. I was stripped naked standing on a mountain top before me was every kind of girl, large ones, round ones, Brown ones, Black ones, tall ones CRAZY Ones...
