Doomsdayer Survivalists on Nat'l Geographic last night

Anyone else catch this show? Kind of interesting but these people are out of touch with reality me thinks. I guess it takes all kinds.

Interesting what folks focus on when fear drives them.

Read some stats where any kid has a 1 in 4000-ish chance of getting squished to death in a car accident but a 1 in 2,500,000-ish chance of being abducted and murdered by a sicko. What do folks overwork as far as taking precautions?

Scary thing is these types are not just not preparing... they dream of it happening. I know a few of these type, generally weak in mind and have some major self asteem issues.

I've only seen the previews, but they look so fake and scripted. The true doomsday preppers don't advertise it on tv because they don't want the world knowing where to come looking for food and shelter when the SHTF. One need only look at the aftermath of Katrina or the Rodney King riots to know the gov't. will not be there to save you if civil order breaks down. Doesn't mean I want to build a basement shelter with canned food and such. But I don't expect anyone to rescue me if it starts going down. The one I wonder about is when (not if) the caldera underneath Yellowstone blows. When that happens, there will be no more flights over the western US. No delivery of gov't. aid possible no matter how well prepared FEMA is before it happens. Could happen tomorrow, could be in 10k years. Ditto for Mt. Ranier.

I saw the previews and I was pretty sure I had no interest in watching the show. Even if you have a year of food for you and the family what are you going to do for the next decade and beyond?

You can have a pretty good defense but can you really keep a group of 20 bad guys at bay forever? Even if you have a castle can you withstand a siege for years?

Maybe you have enough enough guns to take from others when times get bad enough (best defense is a good offense)?

Maybe you don't hold off 20 bad guys...maybe you kill them before they get to you or you "bug out" to another location?

I have a feeling the seriously prepared have all this thought out....and are way ahead of you.

I didn't watch the show but a good friend of mine is a very serious prepper. Unlike the normal derogatory comments that are thrown around here for anyone who thinks different from the mainstream (referencing earlier comments about low self "asteem" (sic)), this guy has a Masters in Electrical Engineering and an MBA. He is also a very successful VP in a Fortune 100 company. His goal is to be able to take care of his family in the event of a Katrina or any other type disaster. He is not paranoid...just prepared. And, if something does happen, he will outlast all of us.

Hurricane Dolly proved to me that I wasn't prepared well enough. Everyone should at least have something put back to help insure survival. How long or how much is a personal decision I guess. Don't get caught short is all I can say...

Watch "the road", kind of makes you think a little. I would think that being very portable would be better then entrenched.

You are correct about being mobile...hence my earlier comment about "bug out".

I hope that many realize that in the event of any major event, grocery stores will be out of food in just a couple of days...they don't stockpile food they way they used to. JIT deliveries took care of that.

You may not want to stockpile food to last a year; however, you should have enough to eat for several weeks.

I watched it....One of the preppers was in Houston...during her bugout walk...she was fearful of getting mugged by live zombies.

Nothing wrong with being prepared...I learned that in the scouts. Keep stacking the food up and advertizing...those with more sense will come over and borrow some milk!

Curiousity had me DVR the show. The first couple featured were serious preppers. 50,000+ lbs of food, a shipping containers fortress, school buses and a backup crew for bugging out. They have enough food for 20 people for over 10 years. Crazy...but they we're prepared as I ever saw.

On my farm i dont worry too much. But if the end comes and you guys are headed my way, better bring your share of supplies

I definitely have enough ammo to last for many years. But fuel, food and water are not stockpiled. There's a gas station walking distance and plenty of stores around, even a gun store within a mile. I wonder how fast things would dry up in an emergency.

The oddest thing about all the emergeny prep that actualky took place...water storage. Folks run out to empty the shelves of bottlle water. Why don't they just shut off the supply to the house to isolate house supply and use the water that is already in the pipes and water heater? Portability? They dont have plastic bottles already to fill? Just saying..

...we have over 28,000 gallons of water stored....in the pool! Lol

I don't think having 2 weeks of food on hand makes you any kind of a survivalist nut. Every part of the nation has its hazards. Lots of different seismic threats here in WA. If anyone seriously threatened my family with violence, it would be a met with amply doses of 7.62mm. It doesn't have to be post-civilization for that to be true.

The first thing to know is that inside of the first year, at least 90% of the population will be gone, if not more. So, making it past the first year is essential.

After that, you need to have the means to sustain yourself., with gardens, etc.

I expect that you need more than one year of food, probably closer to 2. You may be in the wrong part of the year when the problem hits, to get a crop planted.
