Chicago Made Polish Kielbasa...need help
This weekend after 8 years of living in LV I found a Polish Deli that has the best Kielbasa ( lean)I have ever had and at 4.50 Lb. Very heavy Hickory smoked, the coarsely ground style has a Black casing...I asked where they got it from and she said Chicago....
I am wondering if any of the Chicago Boyz on this Board might be of help in locating the source? All the meats that they had were delicious. I have checked online..and there are several larger sausage makers that make commerical product...this seems to be made by a smaller speciailty mfg. Also I doubt hat I will be able to beat their prices..at $4.50 lb smoked and $3.80 lb fresh. Anybody bin here? http://www.yelp.com/biz/kurowskis-sausage-shop-chicago So Chicago Boyz what do ya know about Polack food in Chi town? Does Domowa mean anything? It seems to mean homemade in Polish..so Homemade style Kielbasa in Chicago?

I've been to Kurowskis and that is one serious meat store. I have no idea of their business model, but I don't suspect that it involves shipping to LV? the deli wouldn't tell you where they got it? you don't want to buy it from the deli?
A place like Joe and Frank's (joeandfranks.com) may distribute? Their current ad shows 1.99 lb fresh. :shrugs: This place is outstanding, but I don't suspect they distribute? Our Story - Gene's Sausage Shop & Delicatessen Somewhat closer to me and its been on my to-investigate list... Bobak Sausage Company -Bernie |

Not sure but maybe try Rose in Barrington, west of the city. I think the other brand we get is Bosaki. Also had great kielbasa from a few smaller packers near the IL / WI border. Nothing like doing up your own kraut, boiled potato, kielbasa, with dark rye bread on the side and fave brew.
Other - Thru the years have had some of my family and friends own farm stock and processed at local packers. Always cost more but at least you know where the meat is exactly from and has a more select taste. I can only think of one time that I didn't care for the taste from our own ram bratwurst. Probably because the butcher didn't do the right spice flavoring before casing. |

I'll be there next weekend visiting relatives. Probably 5 minutes from that Belmont area. I'll ask a friend who lives real close to that neighborhood. He knows all of the local Polish joints.

I have seen the Bobak site..it seems a bit more commercial like Kowalski's in Detroit. Kurowski's looks like the place...geezus I would visit Chicago just go to that place... I asked her...she told me but it didn't register....and I am a cheap fk...so I want to find her source....I seriously don't think I can beat her prices with shipping. I would be such a small consumer that I can not buy in the bulk necessary. I would like to know what the cost per Lb is in Kurowski's...and would like to try everything at least once. I luv the Head Cheese...even the Kiska..Blood Tongue...

That is why Polacks and Huns die young...
The stuff I had was alot leaner than what I have ever had before...It had a heavy Hickory smoked flavor...

dunno which place she got them, but one of the most well known polish meat producers is Bobak's. there are alot of smaller family owned butcher shops still in the polish areas.

Went back today....Andys Deli is where she gets most of her stuff. Her prices are substantially lower than buying direct. That Kurowskis store is the place I would like to visit...phewwww...
Went over to Euro Indo Grocery store and bought a piece of Pulaskis Kracow Smoked Kielbasa and a large chunk of what is more or less commercial grade Kielbasa..going to make Kapusta with it...the other stuff is too good for throwing it into a pot with Cabage and Sauerkraut..... Got me sum Braunweiger, Domowa Kielbasa, a 2 lb chunk of Pork Tongue Loaf and some Fresh Kielbasa to smoke myself....UMMMMMMM this ought to last a coupla days...
