I did a search on here a little while ago to find this, and didn't come up with anything. So I emailed Ducati SPA with my question and just got the reply today.

My question to them: How many Ducati 916's were made in 1998? They replied to me with a complete and exhaustive list of how many 916's of EVERY iteration were made in EVERY production year, broken down by the model and where it was sent. I'm blown away by the level of response I got. Here's what they sent me:

Then I am inclined to think my previous assumption is true: It's a standard `98 916 with a big bore kit, and the guy is just adverising it (misleadingly) as an "SP".

As JR mentioned, all will become clear with a VIN/engine #.

The 916/996/998 bikes are pretty cheap now. I feel very strongly that they'll be worth good dollars 20 years from now. Seems like a good investment to me, especially if you can slip one into your living room as art

I'm still on the hunt...will take a good deal on any of the series. I have jist the spot for it in my new office within my mancave/barn. Collecting motorcycles is a heck if a lot cheaper than collecting old Porsches! (the wife should appreciate it)

Over valentine's dinner last night, Mrs Motion and I were talking about the 998 Bostrom parked in the dining room. She encouraged me to pick up a few more collectible bikes for the house, and she pointed to where they could be parked. You guys think its some sort of trap?
