Anyone here ever make or work on furniture? (couches)
For reasons that we'll leave unmentioned, I am faced with having to rework a couple of brand new couches.
There are 2 of them, they both look basically like this, except with 2 cushions on each couch instead of 3: ![]() What I need them to look like is this configuration (note how it ends up with a total of 6 cushions, instead of the original 4): ![]() At first, that seemed like an impossible (or very difficult) task. But as I thought about it, it seems doable. Basically, it seems like I can take off the upholstery off the right arm of one of them. I'd have to then chop off the framing for the arm and make a straight, armless edge. This would end up being the smaller, 2 cushion section of the "L" and butt up against the longer section. After having a look at the framing, this seems very doable, and I probably don't even need any additional fabric, etc. The other, longer section of the L would be 4 cushions. This could be more complicated. I'd have to cut off the arm, extend the frame by 2 cushion lengths, and frame and build the back seating area. That would extend along the back of the couch, and also turn at the end to form the L. I would have the 4 additional cushions (2 seating cushions and 2 back cushions) made, so no worries about that. If I got stuck on any other upholstery issues, I could farm that out too (I have woodworking experience and tools, not so much with upholstery). I'm pretty handy, having rebuilt engines, made big skate ramps for the kids, hung doors, etc. over the past 25 years. What does the board think? Is that crazy, or doable? |

to visualize, the short end would be reconfigured to look something like this:
And the long end something like this: |

Second is a good custom upholstery shop can be pricey. Anything is doable it's just a mater of how much you can do or afford to have done and is it worth it.. Obviously your wife wasn't very impressed with your offer of sexual favours to leave things as they are....

If I had the talent to do all that I would have made the couch in the first place and not bought one.

OK, now that is cute and disgusting, respectively.
I am being gentlemanly. Let's just say for the room redo, I was in charge of flat screen TV, surround system and electronics. (Which, if I have to say so myself, came together beautifully) |

I think what you need to do is take off the upholstery off the right arm of one of the two seat sofas. Then remove the framing for the arm and make a straight, armless edge, which would end up being the smaller section of the "L" and match up with the longer section. It seems very doable, you probably don't even need any additional fabric, etc.
The other section of the L could be a bit more technical. remove the arm, and extend the frame by two cushion lengths, then frame and build the back seating area. That would extend along the back of the couch, and also turn at the end to form the L. You could probably have two new cushions made. . If your handy and can think through this then its doable.

Sadly... around here, we can buy a new couch for less $$$ than we would pay for fabric to revover or rework the existing one

I would do a third piece for the corner
or put a table there or a nest of throw pillows extending the structure is a pain cuting of the arms should work but creating a corner bit is reinventing the wheel find a corner piece and recover/re-cushion to match far easier |
