Best way to tell your boss that you are leaving?
I am about to accept a better job offer after working 21 years at the same company as a machine designer. Pretty nervous about telling my boss (who I get along great with) that I am jumping ship. I obviously do not do this kind of thing every day. What is the best way to handle such a thing without getting ugly?

Do you have a offer letter or contract already?
I would not make a move unless you had something in writing.

Had one, but I renegotiated over health insurance issues.... New offer letter is on it's way today for me to sign.

Just tell him. I promise you he'll be OK with it. People change jobs all the time and there's no easy way to do it.
BTW, Most of what we worry about will never happen.

A letter presented to him in a sit-down meeting.
"My resignation comes as a result of an unprecedented oppotunity for me professionally at my new company and does reflect negative feelings about company XYZ or my manager Mr. ABC" ...basically, it's not you, it's me.

what if it doesn't "get ugly" but instead your current boss makes you a counter offer that is "very pretty"?

Do nothing before you have that letter/contract in hand!
If your boss is worth his salt he will be more than OK with you simply telling him that you will be leaving and explaining your reasons for doing so. If anything he should be supportive given your long service to his organisation, and the fact that you are clearly doing this not because you think either him or the company suck, but purely for career progression. I've been a giver and a receiver of notice on a few occasions, and what typically sits best with everyone is a short informal chat over a cup of coffee with a formal letter that follows.

My brother worked for a real a$$ a number of years ago. One of his colleagues resigned by tossing a 3,5" diskette containing a soft copy of his resignation onto this guy's desk, telling him to go print it himself.
Probably not the best way to do things, but I guess sometimes you feel you have to...

I think if you have been there for 21 years & get along with him personally, you don't have to be too formal about it. I would just ask him for a private conversation and tell him you have received an offer with another company that you don't feel you can turn down and will be taking it. Thank him and whoever else you want to for the opportunities and friendship they graciously gave you and express a slight amount of regret for leaving the place you have been happy working at for so long and ask to always be on a friendly basis with them. Also present a letter saying essentially the same. A big congrats to you! Sometimes a change is a real rejuvinator.

Just be professional and lay out what has been offered. You don't want to burn any bridges you never know if you might have to come back.

He'll be fine. Maybe a little insulted at first if you are close but he'll get over it. If he does not then he's not the person you thought he was.
I would not keep someone on for 21 years. If they'd had several jobs before getting to me and have gained experience in different places then sure, stay as long as it benefits us both. But if it's their 1st, 2nd real gig the right thing is to encourage them to move on and broaden their skill set, get a chance to move up the ladder. I've had plenty of them do that and years down the road come back far more valuable than when they left. Good luck, sounds exciting.
