Google Privacy Rule Changes

I cleared out my browser history, what else should I do?

I heard there is a multi-step way to sign out of the "information sharing" scheme.

Is there a better article than this one out there?

IMHO, absolutely NOTHING on the Internet is private. It's a very safe assumption that anything you do/type/send/receive/buy/etc. is public information. I seriously doubt that clearing your browser history will help anything.

Also, the "news" is in the business of making money (No, the are not in the business of providing news.). So, the more "shock value" a story has, the more visitors they have (or viewers, etc.), and therefore the more advertisers they get, therefore the more money they make. Don't believe all the hype.

Wow, I'm getting old! Ha ha.

Burn your computer, legally change your name, maybe your sex as well, get a new SS#, move to Bora Bora and live in a hut on the beach subsisting on coconuts and whatever seafood you can catch.

The "new" privacy policy is simply to clean up and consolidate everything they've already been doing for years.

In a nutshell, it was already too late years ago.

I have been reading about Googles changes. I am now waiting for Data Mining -> Marketing "Feedback".

If for whatever reason I look up "Pink Fuzzy Bunnys" using Google's search engine.
So they target market me with email me about Pink Fuzzy Bunnys
So gmail email marketing readers notice the key words Pink Fuzzy Bunnys causing Google search algorithm to recommend sites about pink fuzzy bunnys.
which triggers gmail to spam me with email about Pink Fuzzy Bunnys.....

* switch to FireFox, which also has a "Tell websites I do not want to be tracked" which probably doesn't do a whole lot, but you can turn it on just in case.

* The worst browser you can run is IE, followed by Chrome. Why? Because Chrome is designed to spoon feed ads to you, and spoon feed your info back to google. It's like using a burglar alarm designed and installed by burglars.

* Get https://addons.mozilla.org/en-uS/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/ and turn off the "allow some non-intrusive advertising" in the filter preferences. Then install the relevant "privacy" filter list for whichever filter subscription you choose. There's also Facebook privacy lists available.

* Get https://addons.mozilla.org/en-uS/firefox/addon/betterprivacy

* if you want take it a little further, get https://addons.mozilla.org/en-uS/firefox/addon/ghostery

* Next step would be https://addons.mozilla.org/en-uS/firefox/addon/noscript

* another of my favorites is https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flashblock which cuts out all the dancing baloney ads

The Better Privacy add-on handles those.

This is good to know, have you checked to see if any are getting through/staying on the computer.
I have some ad-ons on my firefox and chrome but when I physically checked, there were tons of them in my computer. Perhaps I'm not using the correct ones.

Here's what I do:

1) I use separate services for e-mail, social networking, web searches (about the only thing I use Google for), and mapping.

2) I put everything on the most restrictive privacy settings, and only loosen them if there is something I really want to do.

3) I use FireFox as my web browser. I have AdBlock and Flashblock installed, and I have it delete browsing history and cookies upon exit, and I don't leave it open.

4) I run security software on my computer. I like the Norton stuff. Yeah, it consumes a lot of resources compared to others, but it is also the best (IMO) at blocking malicious websites, removing tracking cookies, and stopping malicious scripts. (It consumes a lot of resources because it watches everything.)

5) I use different passwords for different things. I'm not kidding when I say I run 8 different passwords simultaneously. They are randomly generated and I have a scheme for remembering them, which I won't share. Using whole english words in or as passwords are the worst passwords. Using 0 intead of O or 3 instead of E in a word is just as guessable. (I literally open up a copy of Notepad, bang away at the keyboard for 30 seconds or so without looking at the screen, making sure to use letters, numbers, caps, and special characters, then randomly select a string of the proper length from somewhere in the middle of the mess.)

its not just whats on the internet. its the legal software that we buy and put on our computers. we have NO idea what that software is doing in the background.
every thing we do is sent off to be studied to find out what we like so adds can target us.
imagine all the info bill gates get from up just with windows.
