tried to make DR appt. PAIN! knee.

anyone hurt their knee before? i am in pain here. i just emailed my doctor, and tried to make an appt. first available is in 3 weeks. great!

i have never hurt my knee before, and i am at a loss. here is my wonderful deal. i am coming off of an acute gout attack. (there i said it..i have effen gout!). my right foot is sore, but getting better slowly. the attack is basically over. i dont know if i hurt my left leg by hopping around and favoring my right. but i am in pain.

left knee. no swelling. no redness, no heat. pain is in front on top of the kneecap. if i rub it or poke it..it hurts. i cannot bend my knee anymore. just a few degrees. like that upper kneecap tendon is tweaked. pain started a few days ago, but was very tolerable. today..POW!! it came on strong and i am trying to sleep on the couch. it is lower than my bed and all my tossing and turning is messing with my wife. she has a test coming up.

ready for the punch line? i have high liver enzyme levels and i cant take painkillers. i took a single aleve last night, and tonight i took another one. hahhaha..funny me.
doc says aleve is the most liver friendly.

i am going to explore doc options. maybe the ER tomorrow if it goes to hell in a handbasket. i wish i didnt just throw out my crutches.

in summary, right foot in pain from gout, left knee killing me, and i cant toss back any real painkiller loads. whoever is running this thing called my life is a total jokester.

ice? heat?

Ice would be my first move. No more than 15 minutes. Keep it elevated, You could try alternating with heat.
Gentle massage to the area.

Good luck.

Cliff,
I understand what you're going through, believe me, I do! Get that knee looked at ASAP and stay on the Allopurinol!

How do you know it isn't gout that's in your left knee? Point tenderness. Can't bend it. I've never had gout in a knee before, but friends/relatives who have had it there have those symptoms. And you've got a recent history of a gouty attack.

In the meantime, hydration won't hurt. Well, other than having to get up to take a leak 50 bazillion times per day. And while you're at it, unless you're diabetic, cherry juice (i.e. Trader Joe's) might help.

If whomever you eventually see agrees that it might be gout, and you can't take NSAIDs because of your liver, don't hate the steroid injection. I finally tried it after Tobra's rec, and it's been night-and-day relief for an acute gouty attack.

The other common gout med for an acute attack is Colchicine, but that's metabolized by the liver, as well.

I've had gout in my shoulder, wrist, but mostly in the great toe on each foot. Get this checked out and know what you're dealing with. When you start Allopurinol, you can have an attack until the drug has adequate time to lower the SUA. Hang in there...

Can water help clear uric acid? Does it lower it's concentration?

Edit - Just called my brother - a GP. Mentioned the drug Allopurinol as a low cost method to keep uric acid at bay. Also mentioned diet options which can be found on line. Mentioned water can help depending on if you are either a high producer or low secreter of uric acid. Low secreter will not have the same impact as a high producer with hydration. It dilutes the uric acid to the point that it will not crystallize.

Can't you get crutches at most drug stores?

It sounds like you need some.

Life can't be that cruel. Can it?

I have the weekend to chill. My wife thinks crutches ate at her parents. I hope so.

Cliff,
Be careful with "natural" meds, herbal, Motrin, Tylenol, etc... because they can really mess with your liver enzymes. Even the so-called "harmless" stuff like Glucosamine can wreak havoc with liver enzymes...

If having liver issues check with Docs prior to inbibing anything, IMHO.

Elevate, support entire leg, ice on the knee, cool compress, ice, repeat...

Check with a Chiropractor. You might be pleasantly surprise. There are some very good ones out there, check with friends and neighbors in your area. They might be able to help and your issue might be more mechanical than drug related. Especially if you have been overusing one leg due to the gout in another. I know people who also go in for some deep tissue massage and claim that it helps.

Give it some rest this weekend, stay off of it. Do not go out and keep your walking to a minimum. Rest!

yea. GH. my doc is pretty proactive. she just ordered monthly liver test while i start new meds.

she prescribed my indocin with a statement. "cliff, you are truly between a rock and a hard place".

i wish i could cuss on this forum on the bright side..if i hold my hands out in front of me while i walk..i look like zombie!!

another brightside! my little adoption dog is amazing. he has not really left my side. he walks slowly by my side, like he is guarding me. very cute. smart dog. zombie walking a dog!
