New Cayman based retro 904

You want: Porsche P/904 Carrera - BBC Top Gear

Quote:
It's called the Porsche P/904 Carrera, and it is the latest in an army of classic bodystyles hiding modern machinery.

Texas-based Tuner Gullwing America has announced this as its latest project; an ambitious build harking back to the glory days of 1960s endurance racing, and one of the prettiest Porsche models ever built.

I'd much rather have a Beck 904

I fail to see how it has anything at all to do with either Ferrari or a fiero.

Quote:
According to Gullwing-America, the prototype will be built upon the 2005 – 2011 Porsche Boxster platform, complete with modern hardware. The P/904 Carrera will be powered by the same 3.4-liter boxer engine producing 295-hp mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Power steering and ABS from the Boxster will also remain.

Interior wise, the P/904 Carrera will be offered complete with all the necessary modern conveniences including air conditioning, as well as an instrument panel and center console with GPS navigation and iPod dock. Rather than carrying over the Boxster’s dashboard to fit into the new P/904 package, Gullwing-America put the effort to recreate a more period-correct interior to match the retro exterior. Unique seats and steering wheel are also installed.

Finally, the exterior sports LED lights, a lowered ride height, classic 18-inch Fuch design 5-spoke wheels that fill each wheel well, as well as a retractable active rear spoiler.

The conversion is estimated to cost 70,000 euros, not including the donor Porsche Boxster.

Yeah, I'm with you on that one. It's going to be a 300hp 3.4L boxster which means that it'll be fairly speedy. It's not going to be GT2 fast, but it'll be respectably fast. It'll stop, go and turn with the best of them. It's going to have a Porsche flat 6 engine.

When I think Fiero/Ferrari, I think looks of a Ferrari with crap performance.

Whatever is said about it, it's paying tribute to the awesomeness of the original, and I like that.

Well, keep in mind those pix are merely CGI... it is likely that the final product won't look like that. It certainly won't be that low unless they don't plan to make a streetable car.

If I could afford it I like the fact you could drive the crap out of it and not worry about wrecking a real 904.
Then again I'm getting older and one day my 914 will be almost to low to get into...

I parked beside a 550 kit at a show and I'd be really worried about a soccer mom in a SUV running me over.

Not putting miles on your car is like not having sex with your girlfriend, so she'll be more desirable to her next boyfriend.

The article said it's Boxster based. I don't want to get into a Cayman-Boxster debate, but those are 2 very different cars. The pics look like it came from a Boxster. I can't see cutting the Cayman roof to make it look like the 904. Wouldn't it be easier the start with a Boxster and add the roof?

Isn't a Boxster huge compared to a 904? Are the wheel bases the same?

Cayman, Boxster, either way they will pull the body off and put a totally new shape on.

I think it's a bit whacked to call an older Porsche body based on a newer Porsche as some how just the same as a Ferrari based on Fiero. Hell the original Porsches were based on VW's - I guess that makes an original Porsche 550 a dune-buggy.

That said, I wouldn't pay the premium to have the 904 "look."
