One of the first songs Elvis did in public was "Old Shep" at a state fair. We have talked about Elvis before here. As I said before, if you can listen to OS without a tear, you don't have a lot of emotion.

And to add to that, listen to "Trilogy," Mr. vash.

My wife has instructed that this be played at her memorial. One reason I need to die before her because I absolutely would not be able to handle it.

My first Album I ever retrieved from somewhere-I can't remember- was Elvis. It was a color album with Elvis in black leather?

I musta been 7 years old. Thought he was cool before I knew what that meant.

I do blame him for one thing- Being so anal about my lid!

Why does it seem when some people have it all, they self destruct?
Is it something about 'survival mode' that keeps you interested/excited about tomorrow?

Elvis was the birth of cool to me.

Well, my Mother saw Elvis in his 1st Jacksonville, FL show in 1956,

And she saw his last performance in Jacksonville, FL and even managed to tape it..
So, yes, she was devastated when he passed, we were in Brownsville,TX when the news hit..

Quote:
Anyone who does not recognize or appreciate the talent or contribution of Elvis simply doesn't know anything about contemporary music.

I got slapped hard, figuratively speaking, by one of my musical heroes when I downplayed Elvis's influence once. Because my friend is a super great songwriter, I mistakenly thought that he would agree or not mind if I criticized EP for not writing any of his material. Boy did he let me have it.

"Elvis invented schit" was how he put it. Songwriters are a dime a dozen in comparison, was the gist of his message.
true Dennis, if the song can't be performed properly, it will be a Dud.. Look at how many great songs are done by one performer, only to be a hit by another..

Thanks to all for some great replies.
Plenty of people dont like Elvis, and thats cool.
Me and some others do.
I think most would agree that he had a good voice.
From his early Rockabilly sound to the 70s when his voice was operatic.
Some wont even give him that, and thats ok.
The guys that got to see him live, lucky men.
Thanks.

Let's wrap this back around to a car connection. Here is Linda's Pantera that Elvis shot twice when it won't start.

Here again he did something that we all wish we could do.

What do you expect from an Italian car...albeit with a Ford motor. 351 Cleveland.

First song I EVER remember hearing was Elvis and "Ain't Nothin But A Hound Dog." When you are 3 Hound Dogs catch your attention. Another song I remember is the "Purple People Eaters."

When Elvis came back from the Army (his Mother died while he was in the Army at 42 years old) he was never the same. Elvis always wanted to be a Movie Star and kind of fell into RR. So Elvis became a movies star in flicks that pandered to the younger set, but time had changed by the early 60's with a whole new set of teenagers. Those Elvis movies were for the most part schlocky...like the Beach Blanket Bingo movies. In 63 it was da Beatles that hit the scene...

In 69 Elvis modernized his sound and made a comeback...after that he was a BIG Las Vegas Act...which was mainstream entertainment. Nothing cutting edge...like the Beatles or the Stones...

Elvis, like Brando and Dean opened the door to self expression in performance art. Which back in 56 was a big big deal..

Am I missing something here? If the concert was three months after you were born, then your mom would have been six months pregnant with you, no?

Elvis's home in LV was the International which became the Hilton...The International was the first high rise hotel in LV. The first theme hotel was Caesar Palace in 65 followed by Circus Circus...Caesars was a fav of the NY high rollers.

Before Bugesy built the Flamingo there was the El Rancho and Old Frontier..which were kind of like Dude Ranches..after the Flamingo you had the Sahara, Rivera, Desert Inn, Tropicana, Sands, Dunes, Hacienda and Thunder Bird...along with the gambling hall The Silver Slipper. Around 1960 came the Stardust.

Watch the original Rat Pack movie Oceans Eleven for a feel of the town back over yonder.

Howard Hughes first came to town in the late 60's after he sold off his stake in TWA. He rented the top floor of the Desert Inn (where the Wynn stands now). After awhile the owners of the DI wanted him out, so he bought the place...He didn't like the lights on the Silver Slipper gambling hall shining in his window so he bought them out. Howard also owned the New and Old Frontier. Howard was the first of the Corporate owners which set the stage for Steve Wynn in the late 80's to first get the Golden Nugget downtown and then get Michael Milken JUNK BOND money to build the Mirage...which was a game changer...Today the LV Strip is nothing more than a Carnival/Circus or a Disney Land primarily for adults. .

On December 21 1958, Elvis leased a BMW 507 from BMW Gloeckle. The car was a 'used' one and Elvis knew this, formerly driven by racing ace Hans Stuck. In August 1959 Elvis swapped the white sportscar at BMW Gloeckle for a red 507 which he drove until October 1959. Click the links for photos and information.

Elvis first car in Germany was an old Volkswagen which he eventually gave to his German karate instructor, Jurgen Seydel. On December 21 1958, Elvis leased a BMW 507 from BMW Glöckler. The car was a 'used' one and Elvis knew this, formerly driven by racing ace Hans Stuck. Elvis was assured by Mr Glöckler that 'the car was very well run in by Mr Stuck'. Stuck had raced the car in several sports car events, but the engine was modified for Elvis to use on a daily basis. (So the car was quite special).

Elvis with his red BMW 507.

The price seemed very reasonable - the equivalent of $3,750 USD, instead of $7,160 for a brand new one. Not understanding the contract written in German Elvis thought he was buying the car.
But no, he later learned it was only on lease and had to be returned when he left Germany. So BMW used the promotional value of Elvis driving their car, while Elvis had to pay for it.
Elvis had originally wanted a Porsche Spider, probably due to his being a James Dean fan and this is what Dean had (And died in).
However this was impossible to get immediately so Elvis took an interest in the BMW 507. Probably the reason he opted for the 'used' car was it's immediate availability.
Elvis was handed the keys to the car on December 21, 1958 in a 'ceremony' in the presence of Uschi Siebert, a former Miss Hessen and then a well known TV personality. A dozen photographers and journalists documented the scene. When he actually took possession of the car is unclear but it would have been in the days following after a service and registration change. The number plate on the car that was Elvis' was A-1499 ('1958 US Forces In Germany'). The car was plated 'F-04071' before Elvis took delivery.
In August 1959 Elvis swapped the white sportscar at BMW Glöckler for a red 507 which he drove until October 1959. On the day Elvis spotted a strange looking little car, called BMW Isetta. Elvis ordered king-size Lamar Fike to enter the car, which he refused to do to the relief of Mr Glöckler. It was reported that Elvis also purchased on of these cars on the day but he actually only posed for publicity shots.
(Elvis had previously purchased one before he left the States.)

The BMW 507 was not Elvis' first BMW. On December 21, 1957, Elvis' gave Colonel Parker a red Isetta sports car for a Christmas present. (Click the link to see the Colonel in the car.)
The white BMW 507 caused a lot of problems for Elvis with some female fans writing greetings to Elvis, telephone-numbers, and 'I love you's' with pens and lipstick. Impossible to be removed completely.
There is story that Elvis gave away his 507 to Ursula Andress when filming Fun in Acapulco. This is not true. Elvis never owned either car, they were both on lease and were returned to BMW Glöckler.
