Your Choice And Why? Inane Hypothetical Question.

Let's suppose, hypothetically, that you had to ride a bicycle for ten miles in the traffic lanes of a busy freeway full of cars and semis moving 70 mph.

Can't escape to the shoulder, wait for traffic to die down, there's no loophole trick out of this.

Would you choose to ride with traffic or against traffic? Why?

My answer is:
Peanut Butter

(Questions like that deserve equally sub-intellectual answers)

What difference does it make? You're gonna be a road crayon, either way. Either you see it coming, or you hear it coming.

With. If you survive the first 5 minutes, a tractor trailer is going to come by going slow, and you can grab the trailer and coast 10 miles. Or be killed in a horrible fashion. But its worth a shot!

Makes no difference, you're gonna be fender ketchup in 30 seconds either way.

I have occasionally thought about this question or variants on it. When I was younger, my answer was "with" because it would slightly decrease the relative speed on impact. As I get older, I lean to "against", because you have some ability to see and maneuver, and thus fight against your death.

It's kind of like would you choose to crash as a passenger or a pilot, to die as a gladiator or on the gallows, to be blindfolded or not for the firing squad.

With.

Immediately get into the center of a lane. Cars will back up behind you. At least, that's the way I'd play it. Boy, would there be a lot of pissed off people behind you.

I'd ride with, .............................. but first I'd adapt a honda 250cc engine to the bike frame so I'd be doing at least 70

That's the beauty of hypothetical questions.

the best way is to go against traffic, obviously on the far left side of the road.
Because the other way around you'll die of a heart attack due to constant noise of cars you can't see coming...

Going against traffic, won't make it much safer, but it will be less scary and you'll see the danger as it closes in on ya.
You should not lane split on a bicycle, you won't last 5 minutes that way on a high way.

With. No question about it. Ride near the furthest right side of the road. Glass, rock, just ride over them.

I would stay on the white lines, stop, get off the bike and wave traffic down like I was directing traffic in an emergency. People will stop because they are programmed to stop if they think there is an emergency.

In any case you would be safer off the bike and facing traffic. Screw the bicycle.

I once ran out of gas in my cj-7. Near Blythe on I-10. I rode my mountain bike about 20 miles for fuel. Coming back it was dark and scary. My light was feeble. I thought I was going to die. A big rig passing you in the dark is humbling. I prayed for safe passage.

I've ridden on the freeway, to the right of the fogline. I had no problem at all with it. But if I had to ride IN the lane, I would ride opposite of traffic. And I would ride naked except for a viking helmet perched upon my wind whipped mane of reddish hair, while waving an assault rifle in the air.

I would probably still die, but more people will remember having seen me.
