I love how they cut down on vehicle weight by eliminating body panels!

The 918 is not funded with MY tax dollars. 100% funded by Porsche. And it will probably make money for Porsche in the long run.

Pretty much after the 959, Porsche has not sold one car that hasn't made a profit.

I'd be very happy with just an all electric version of that car, would have to increase the range to a couple hundred miles though and would need another 10-20 mph in the top speed.

Quote:
...........And if you’ve got enough juice from the liquid-cooled, lithium-ion battery pack, you can hit 90 mph without using a single drop of fuel.

...................driving around town on just electricity for 16 miles, but the combination of the two electric motors – on their own more powerful than the 1974 911 Turbo

Hint:

Porsche took government funding to develop EV and hybrid technologies
The batteries in the 918 were developed using government funding
When someone in the US buys a 918 Spyder, they will receive a federal tax credit
When someone in Oklahoma buys a 918 Spyder, they will receive a $6000 state tax credit (in addition to the Federal credit)

That's your hint

I was under the impression that the Oklahoma electric car tax credit had expired. There was a big push a couple of years ago by Tesla to sell cars before the tax credit expired.

Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) Tax Credit

"For tax years beginning before January 1, 2015, a one-time income tax credit is available for 50% of the incremental cost of purchasing a new original equipment manufacturer AFV or converting a vehicle to operate on an alternative fuel. The state also provides a tax credit for 10% of the total vehicle cost, up to $1,500, if the incremental cost of a new AFV cannot be determined or when an AFV is resold, as long as a tax credit has not been previously taken on the vehicle. Equipment used for conversions must be new and must not have been previously used to modify or retrofit any vehicle. The alternative fuels eligible for the credit are compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, and liquefied petroleum gas (propane), and electricity. Tax credits may be carried forward for up to five years. (Reference Oklahoma Statutes 68-2357.22)"

So 50% of the incremental cost plus $1500 in Oklahoma, right now

With 800K sales price the taxes, title and tag will way more than pay for a 6K tax credit!

The sales tax on that would be 26 grand. The registration is just 11 bucks, and the title is just 91 bucks. So about $26,102 in Oklahoma.

I hope someone does buy one. I would like to see that at the local cars and coffee.

Then the same is true for a Prius or Volt or Fusion Hybrid, right?

No kidding! I've already seen "in-the-wild" photos of the accompanying special serialized 911 Turbo you get when you order a 918. I have yet to see one in person, however.

OK, I had to Google it. As I thought the tax credits for electric cars expired in 2010.

You're right, and I'm wrong. While it's good through 2015, you had to buy your hybrid/EV by 2010. Lobbyists successfully repealed the electric or hybrid electric component of the tax credit. Of course, you still get full credit for natural gas, compressed natural gas, propane, or ethanol.

Forget the politics, and if one has to ask the price... well you know the line. Porsche took the project as a showcase, not caring about the price and it's just for the lucky few. The buyer pays a substantial sales tax but really, do most of us even have to care about the few of them?

This is an amazing piece of technology coming to reality and its great.
