Why is all the bread at the Grocery fluffy nothing?

How can Americans eat this fluff? I don't get it and I can't find any real bread.

We have plenty of that fluffy air bread out here, Doug.
Lucky my GF is a great baker.
She makes a great dense bread.
Have you tried going to a baker for bread?
They should have a better range.
Good luck.

We have no local baker here. The bakery in the grocery is still bad. The only thing I've found edible is the Como loaf at Wally World.

But I just don't get it, when did Americans loose all their taste buds?

Its not just in the US, Doug.
They make it with so much preserving content to make it last longer.
Then add the air to save money, and you end up with the sugar air bread.
It like its not baked, but pumped into shape.
Try baking your own, its good fun.

Most of the "bread" in the US is technically "cake". There is no yeast.

"Sunbeam Bread - It's batter whipped".

The "problem" with real bread from a commercial standpoint is inconsistency and that the yeast can make "holes". There was adverstising from some bread company that they'd give you a free loaf if you found a hole bigger than a dime.

None of this bothers me now, since I'm pretty much not eating flour, let alone bread...

I have been thinking about a bread machine... the ones that were the rage 10 years ago. I must go search for one now

Doug I bet you could just make your own.

Because of my Hungarian wife, I have become a bread snob. She calls normal grocery bread: Canadian bread (substitute American). Doughy. Sweet. Wonder Bread. Even the grocery 'french' or 'italian' is crap. Some of the high-end artisan breads are good but at double/triple the price they are hard to justify as staple breads. Nans, Greek pita & Arabic pita are equally disappointing.

Our one good source went bankrupt & we ate crap for a year. We finally discovered another out-of-the-way industrial bakery that has good French bread so this is our new staple.

Breads in Europe are so so much better. I have never had a baguette anywhere in North America that comes close to one from any small bakery in France. Or Italy. Or Turkey.

LOL!!!!

To refute... at least on the west coast... we have an abundance of brew pubs that make their own (very good) beer. However that means the lazy American has to get off their butt and down to the pub.

Lol true we have them in the Midwest as well.

When I was in England I got way drunk on some old speckled hen one night. I've been begging my lazy American friend to home brew something like that for a while now... But ya know... He's a lazy American.

People that care that much about bread make their own. I've been making a couple of loaves a week by hand for years.

Is there an Italian or French market in your area? They usually have good bread.

I also presume you do not have a Trader Joe's.

I'm with red beard though... Americans eat way too many carbohydrates as it is (and salt/sugar).
