Tall Toilets

Mrs. Mossguy and I are officially old enough and creaky enough to benefit from having tall toilets in our house. It seems like the standard tall is 17". If the brain trust has any advice or caveats, we would be glad to hear them! Thanks!

Those seat risers that many people use are awful.

I Installed one when the MIL was living here. It wasn't expensive and therein was the problem. Whatever you buy for a toilet, tall or small, elongated or short stuff, spend the money. Of course Toto is one of the best, but there are many others. Stay away from home store models.

Graham, Thanks!, that is pretty ingenious! We have two toilets in our house. One has a seat riser and could benefit from the toilet riser that you linked. The main toilet has a Brondell bidet seat (elongated) on a round toilet, so we would be looking for a compatible shape as well. Also, the tall toilets at Lowe's can be had for as low as $180.00, making them competitive with the riser.

I installed one of these arm support frame rails for my grandpa, yes honestly, he's turning 100 this summer, and scary thing is he still drives......but he's bright as a tack, okay maybe a sorta non-sharp tack, but he's still bright....

We put an ADA potty in the bath we just redid. The best thing in the bathroom.

My brother said he went to sit down and it hit him in the back of his knees and he had to scoot up on it....I teased him about his ears popping.

We've added tall elongated toilets in each bathroom as we've remodeled them. Worth every penny, makes the "experience" much more pleasant. We have more expensive American Standard models, I think they were in the $160 range. If you clog one, it's something to be proud of.

Raised toilets are simply ADA compliant toilets. Some are called "comfort models".

I've always installed them in our houses. Makes life a little easier.

In the flip side, I've installed kiddie toilets for this that wanted them for their kids. Looks like toy toilet...

Home stores have me convinced that they buy the spec models they can sell cheaply and look like they are discounting. We have seen time and time again how TV's from Costco have their own serial no. identifying them as Costco spec models.

Now I might buy a Costco TV because of the return policy they have. That, plus I don't crap in it. (OK, sorry about the attempt at humor.)

But when you gt into the better toilets, they just perform. I learned this years ago when my BIL owned a small truck stop in MS. He built out the shower facilities on a budget and bought cheap toilets. This was even back in the day when they used 3.5 gal of water per flush.

Almost every time a shower room was rented he had to unstop the toilet. Those truckers could eat a ton and dump the same.

After buying better toilets he had much less problems.

When I read tall toilets it reminded me of being back in Paris, France in the early 60's, that while u stand up to pee you look outward. Passersby could see your face above the metal enclosure. Sorry no pics as I did not own a camera then. I am sure this is not what you had in mind

Larry the cable guy does a bit about how he likes to use the "criple stool" when he goes to a public facility because it has handrails be can hold onto when he's really working hard to get one out.

I agree with Puppy....they are just more comfortable. Granted, I am 6'6", and on a regular can my knees would be up to my forehead. We have a Kohler "Class V", and as mentioned, if you can clog it, you should brag about it!

Get a Toto Drake. That's their handicap toilet. That sound so bad. Its a little taller then normal toilets. I did a job for a giant German man and his giant wife. He was 6'6" and she was 6'2". That was the first thing they ask, a tall toilet and taller then normal countertops through out the house.

I became familiar (funny story how ) with the info at the above site, and more, many years before it was written. In terms of physiology and anatomy, toilet design has been a reverse evolution process wherein toilets have become more and more hazardous to our health beause they prevent our bodies from assuming its most efficient posture, nature's, to evacuate its toxic waste.

The actual term for these are "Comfort Height" if your shopping for one. We got one for our Bathroom when we did our addition. I would think the only reason not to get one is if you have small children.
