ese Surrender- Amazing Footage Sept 2, 1945

Japanese Surrender- Amazing Footage Sept 2, 1945....
This is a 'must see' for the WWII history buff or anyone interested in history.
Interesting the other signers to the document, from New Zealand/Australia
to Europe/Russia.

I received this in an email. The email made it sound like this was some super rare never before seen film. I remember going to the Saturday morning matinee and before the movie were cartoons, then the newsreel, and a serial of course.

\

This is kinda cool. I don't ever remember hearing in school about the Jap surrender and that the French were there. I am sure they were part of the effort but I wonder how many airplanes or aircraft carriers they built. I guess they helped write the surrender document. They are experts in that.

Do a search on the French in Indochina/Asia.

I am always amazed at the lack of respect for the French...I served along side them in two dust-ups and had no issues. The pilots were great.

Oh, I landed on the Missouri during the 1st Persian Gulf War. Awesome. The BB's were WIDE.

I, too, remember the newsreel at the Saturday matinee! I was nine years old. Some years ago I stood on that same spot on the Missouri when it was anchored/berthed at Navy shipyard in Bremerton. It was a strange and awesome feeling.

Paul, I don't either understand the disdain for the French. (On a side note, the French-Vietnamese young ladies were in my opinion, some of the most beautiful women in the world, followed closely by the Filipino-Americans).

Like a Dork, when I landed on the Missouri I asked the Captain if I could get out of my helo and stand on the "spot". Since I was delivering "Pony" (the Navy folks will know what that means) he said do it.

I did and so did my co-pilot and crewmen.

Awesome.

Concerning your side note: Yes.

The French military is joked about like the Egyptian army. The most famous of the French fighting forces is the French Foreign Legion and those are not Frenchmen!

This is mostly humor but shows a long history of the French fighting:

French Military History in a Nutshell

Gallic Wars: Lost. In a war whose ending foreshadows the next 2000 years of French history, France is conquered by of all things, an Italian.

Hundred Years War: Mostly lost, saved at last by a female schizophrenic who inadvertently creates The First Rule of French Warfare - "France's armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchmen."

Italian Wars: Lost. France becomes the first and only country ever to lose two wars when fighting Italians.

Wars of Religion: France goes 0-5-4 against the Huguenots.

Thirty Years' War: France is technically not a participant, but manages to get invaded anyway. Claims a tie on the basis that eventually the other participants started ignoring her.

War of Devolution: Tied; Frenchmen take to wearing red flowerpots as chapeaux.

The Dutch War: Tied.

War of the Augsburg League/King William's War/French and Indian War: Lost, but claimed as a tie. Deluded Frogophiles the world over label the period as the height of French Military Power.

War of the Spanish Succession: Lost. The War also gave the French their first taste of a Marlborough, which they have loved ever since.

American Revolution: In a move that will become quite familiar to future Americans, France claims a win even though the English colonists saw far more action. This is later known as "de Gaulle Syndrome", and leads to the Second Rule of French Warfare: "France only wins when America does most of the fighting".

French Revolution: Won, primarily due to the fact that the opponent was also French.

The Napoleonic Wars: Lost. Temporary victories (remember the First Rule!) due to leadership of a Corsican, who ended up being no match for a British footwear designer.

The Franco-Prussian War: Lost. Germany first plays the role of drunk Frat boy to France's ugly girl home alone on a Saturday night.

WWI: Tied and on the way to losing, France is saved by the United States. Thousands of French women find out what it's like not only to sleep with a winner, but one who doesn't call her "Fraulein." Sadly, widespread use of condoms by American forces forestalls any improvement in the French bloodline.

WWII: Lost. Conquered French liberated by the United States and Britain just as they finish learning the Horst Wessel Song.

War in Indochina: Lost. French forces plead sickness, take to bed with Dien Bien Flu.

Algerian Rebellion: Lost. Loss marks the first defeat of a Western army by a Non-Turkic Muslim force since the Crusades, and produces the First Rule of Muslim Warfare -"We can always beat the French." This rule is identical to the First Rules of the Italians, Russians, Germans, English, Dutch, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Eskimos.

War on Terrorism: France, keeping in mind its recent history, surrenders to Germans and Muslims just to be safe.

The Wikipedia article is a bit more balanced:

Glen, you really have no idea. Do a search on the infamous RC4 road.

What follows inn the coming years are the death of many brave men on both sides.

They didn't die of the flu.

For anyone to suggest they did is a travesty.

Paul, as I said I mostly kid the French because it is so easy. No doubt they had and have some fine fighting forces. The French Indochina war really had nothing to do with WW2 and the war with Japan.

The First French Indochina War Began: December 19, 1946. WW2 ended with the video at the start of this thread on Sept 2, 1945.

The novel December 6 by Martin Cruz Smith highlights much of the intrigue and interrelationships of events and conflicts in the Far East during this period. Worth a read. Sort of a "Cliff's Notes" of the background of WWII.

Good, but it did.

Excellent video and thanks for posting.

The footage is amazing and needs to be seen without comment. Great ship, great men, the future of Japan assured when She destroyed so much.

Korea, the Philippines...

Do you think nothing happened in French Indochina before 19 December 1946? These things were not discrete events like Washington's Birthday. The conflict started in the 1860's as per your reference.

I agree, and I'll leave the discussion at this point.

The people have been fighting over in the middle east for thousands of years. Is that related as well?

So the Jews, Christians and the Muslims fighting over a city in Jerusalem is why Hitler invaded Poland ?

And because Hitler invaded Poland the Djiboutian–Eritrean border conflict started?

Sure whatever you say.
