california concealed carry question.

i always thought a concealed carry permit in california was like a unicorn. talked about, but never seen.

the landowners that let me turkey hunt on their land both just completed a course and just got their permits. apparently the sheriff in their county provides a course and issues the permits. amazing.

what happens when they drive into san francisco secretly armed?
can i get a permit in their county, and be legit in my county?

just wondering.

I've read up a lot on this and it looks like you can only apply for a permit in your county of residence. If you're not in one of the good counties or not a large donor to your sheriff's campaign, you're SOL. But the good news is that once you have it, it's good statewide. Unfortunately, there is no non-resident permit in CA so I have to fly under the radar.

Wow, yeah, I figured it was just a myth and that the only thing that you could carry concealed in Cali was a flower or donation for an illegal resident.

Yes, in CA if one county issues the permit then the others will honor it. There are some up north and in the central area where they are very easy to get as long as you have no record or any "bad marks" in your history. Unfortunately though, the CA permits are not honored in many other states so you still have to get one of those "master" ones. Since I teach at various local colleges and with the recent shooting in Oakland I think I might apply again since it has been 8 years or so since I tried but my paperwork seemed to have disappeared!!?? We seem to be getting more and more vets with PTSD and other issues.......

If you can get a permit in your county, it is good for the entire state. Some people living at the LA/Kern county border purposely move to the Kern side to get their permit. It is impossible to get in LA county. It sure doesn't make any sense to have this differ by county.

I have had a permit in Grass Valley for about ten years and just did my two year renewal. If you want to carry in SF I would call an SFPD station near where you want to go, explain why you want to carry and get permission AND the officer's name. I also have a Utah permit which is good for 28 states, but not Ca...

I very nearly bought property in Riverside County a few years ago; as part of my homework, I checked into how easy or difficult it was to get a CCW through Riverside and found it was actually pretty easy and straightforward. LA County? Forget it. I believe they've even rejected carry permits for federal judges. It's simply ridiculous.

Fresno County issues them like candy
The deputies even have the forms in their car & will give you one if you ask.
As long as you aren't prohibited by law to have a gun, you can have a CCW

Isn't it still a pretty onerous process, even in the CCW-friendly counties? I browse calguns once in a while for this stuff and it looks like it's expensive and lengthy. If CA issued non-resident permits, I'd do whatever it took to get one.

Wasn't there a rule in Cali that the guns have to be unloaded? Or was that for open carry?

That was open carry. We got a new sheriff in Sacto Co that has been issuing permits. It is apparently at the whim of the sheriff of whatever county you are talking about, totally random.

^ 100% correct. CCW is a cottage industry here.

Self deffense is a RIGHT. Why do we need a permit?

It's about $200 for the application fee and currently about a 6 month backlog on paperwork.
You also have to take the cert course, about $200 for that and you have to re-take the cert course to be able to renew the CCW

Find your county here: Calguns License To Carry Information Forum - Calguns.net

Some counties issue, some only issue to the rich and famous, or to the politically connected (ie, donors to the re-elect the Sheriff fund), and some for all practical purposes don't issue at all San Francisco has issued 1.

Not any more, well, sort of. You are required to make an appointment to apply, and all the appointments are booked for 2012, and you cannot yet make an appointment for 2013. In other words, if you want one, be prepared to wait a year or more to even apply.

permits are needed for the exercise of many rights

but there is no right to carry a concealed firearm in public, unless granted by the govt.

In Nevada County (an hour north of Sac) it costs $71 and the course is about $100. Two chairs, no waiting. The form is about one page plus a check off list on the back saying you understand all the laws...about 20 items...just read and initial. Of course you must prove you live in the county.

Do you have to do it in Grass Valley, or can you do it at any Sheriffs office?

What did you give as "good cause"?
