Why shouldnt I sell my 87 Carrera to buy a Boxster?

So I am facing another dilemma. I know my last inquiry was about an engine upgrade. Today while perusing one of my client's inventory online I noticed that they had some Boxsters for a fairly affordable price. As in, I could sell my Carrera, pay cash and walk away with money still in the bank for my wedding.

I like the idea of the Boxster. With some mods it could be a fairly aggressive Daily Driver. A few suspension mods, maybe a different front cover and rear hood I would be in shape.

So, why shouldn't I sell the 3.2 Carrera for a Boxster?

It's important to shoot first... cause shooting second might not be an option if ya don't!

How much for the Carrera?

If you like the idea of working a/c (which is useful in SoCal), a convertible (which is useful in SoCal), and "modern" ergonomics, then the Boxster may be great! Just make sure you steal the Boxster (they're a dime a dozen) and get a huge premium for the Carrera (nice G50s are scarce), or it won't be a good financial move.

I've been a big defender of water pumpers here but there is a HUGE difference in the cars in terms of what was going on at Porsche when they were built, the philosophy and the finished product. The Carrera was the absolute zenith of the "old" air-cooled platform and they are a thousand times more desirable, worldwide, than a Boxster. Boxsters are disposable cars, no different than a Camry or a Civic.

I would definitely recommend anyone buying a cheap Boxster but to get rid of a Carrera, (unless it's a POS), to buy one is not smart.

Obviously this person does not know which Carrera is being discussed and deserves this diss because of the nastypost about Boxsters.

To Brando, I'd say look around at various possibilities including a 996. They may not be as cheap as a Boxster, but you do get more car and more room. I just drove ours over for a smog check and it runs like a fine watch. But, it is not a comfortable car for a 6' guy.

Maybe that's why you see a lot of women in them. I can tell you this though, a Boxster S will tear a new ass/hole in a G50 Carrera.

If your '87 is well sorted and trouble free, think twice about the Boxster. They do require attention.

Edit: Oh, and you don't have to do anything to the Boxster S. It already has the suspension and brakes to get the job done. To do any stiffer would be to suffer unnecessarily. Just use great tires.

The biggest reason. The Boxster is a dropping in value. The Carrera is going up.

The Boxster is a nice car and faster and modern, but it will continue to drop in value.

There is a 2001 on Auto Trader in Dallas for $16,500. Only 25,500 miles

Your quest for excellence has reached its destination here with this 2001 Porsche Boxster Cabriolet. With the top down, this ride provides the cruise of a lifetime, and the stick shift transmission delivers complete control of the 217HP, 6 Cylinder Boxer engine. Immaculate Speed Yellow paint and Black leather seats exude the quality that a vehicle of this stature possesses. It also includes power everything, interior air filtration, climate control, leather trim on shift knob, leather steering wheel, and more. With only 25,500 miles, new brakes, new Michelin Pilot Sports tires, and complete dealer maintenance, this exotic looks, runs, and feels like new. Experience the power and finesse of this machine today!.
Seems high for a 2001, and I don't think it is an "S" at 217 HP

you already have a G-50 trans. in your 3.2L, so the fateful step to a Boxster is small

if you had an earlier car - you know, a real Porsche - then it would be different

since you are already on the slippery slope, why not slide as far into the mud as possible?

Because the air cooled snobs here will give you a rash of caca over it?

But seriously... I would trust Kaisen and Zeke... the Carrera will most likely hold it's value better than the Boxster.

Then again Boxster prices have been slipping for a few years... they have to bottom out soon... and many have said automobiles are horrible investments.

Someone famous said "buy the newest Porsche you can afford."

Wow, tough crowd. OP already knows what the 3.2 Carrera is like. He already knows the financial differences between the two cars, and is looking for a different experience and to cash out some bucks for a wedding. Both cars have their merits, but they are in fact different.

My 2 cents; yes, you may regret selling the 3.2, but you may not. Try driving a Boxster S, and imagine if you didn't have the 3.2 any more, would you miss it?

Don't have a big wedding if you have to sell your car for it. The wedding will be long over, everyone will be sober and you'll be stuck driving a Boxster.

I'd keep the Carrera, drive to Vegas in it to get married and start saving for a Boxster when you return.

I just bought a '98 yesterday and drove it around 750kms home. Comfortable, a/c works a treat and enough power when up the rev range to shoot past three or fours cars on an overtake. I thought them a bit girly I must confess, but now I see the attraction. Small, comfortable, great handling and good stoppers. Oh and on a nice day you can 'drop the top'.
