Learned to drive a stick in my dad's '67 bug.

First car was a German made '73 Capri V6.

It was a quick car, with a good 4 speed, and a blast to drive. Put 165K on it before it started terminally falling apart. It forced me to learn mechanical skills just to keep it on the road. The only shortcoming was that it was a bit tail happy (think early Mustang.) Got my first significant ticket in it at 16 doing 65 in a 35 out on a 4 deserted 4-laner in the country at 1:30 AM. Bought a very high-tech solution after that a Fuzz Buster radar detector (a huge black box with a white light - which could only sit on the dash - it successfully alerted me to my next ticket - doing 75 in a 55, great technology!)

A succession of German cars followed - mostly AWD Audis

1959 Chevy Bel Aire I paid $45 for it. That was in 1970. Very rusted out floor plans and trunk, but a large back seat, which is what you needed when you were 16. Sold it for $75 two years later. Flat head six IIRC.

"55 Ford, 2 door sedan, Y-block 273 V8 w/ 3 speed on the column & over drive, dual exhaust. Plus a brake light shutoff switch so the cops behind couldn't tell you were jamming on your brakes to slow down.

Got my first car for my 11 year birthday, a 1956 Volvo 444.

It was only used for off-road driving

First on-road car was a 1970 Volvo 121 Amazon.

1969 Pontiac GTO new off the showroom floor was the first car I bought. My parents had me drive an 88 olds Super when I was in HS. Wonder how I survived in that car?? Driving home on Sat nights having to cover one eye so I wasn't seeing four lines in the center of the road.

My first car was this 73 Dodge Dart, slant six 3-on-the-tree standard tranny. Paid $400 for this beauty when I was 17!

It took one summer in the "girl repellent" sedan to convince me to buy a cooler car... it was this $2500 75 Dodge Dart Sport, 360 V8 4-speed:

My first was a 1962 Rambler Classic. Paid $25 for it, rebuilt the engine for $200. The thing was Pink. However, it had fiber optics control panel. The seats would lay down to about double bed size. We camped in it. Sold it three years later to my college professor who drove it until the wheels fell off maybe 10 years later??? What a cheap to run tank that thing was.

Bought a 65 mustang and put the guts of the wrecked gt350 into that one. Built to cobra spec.

65' Dodge Custom 880. 383.Gold with Black steel wheels. Very Dragnet looking. Huge back seat. My grandpa was a car salesman, took it in on trade, and gave it to me.

It was a great car. After high school I sold it to my aunt for $200 bucks. She ran it out of oil and blew up the motor about six months later.

Red 1958 cj-5

The first car I ever bought was a 1958 CJ-5 Jeep.
I’ll never forget the lesson it taught me. My brother and I had gone to look at it on a Friday night down in a trailer park off the 405 in Culver City. Old guy owned it and said he’d used it out in the desert to haul dirt out of his mine.
I had to work the next day so I had my dad go do the deal for me. He called from the phone booth outside the bank to say he didn’t think it was a good deal. Claimed the jeep was laying down a smoke screen like a destroyer. He didn’t think I’d be able to drive it on the road. Being an all-knowing teenager, I figured he just didn’t want me to have a jeep as a first car. I told him that we hadn’t seen any smoke the previous night and that he should just pay the man the $375 and be done with it. I wanted that jeep.
Well, when I got home was I ever disappointed. Dad was right.
Long story short, it was over a year before I had that jeep on the road. Turned out it had a cracked block, broken rings etc., you name it, it was bad.
I’ve had a very strong dislike for RED colored cars ever since.
And I learned to listen to my dad a little more closely.

1967 Chevy Nova 4-door Sedan!!

I couldn't find a pic but found thie one on the web. It was my grandmothers then my fathers before it was given to me in high school. When I picked up my girlfriend at here house she would duck down in the seat so no one would see her driving in iot thru her neighborhood!

It had 90hp and real low gearing and a 3 speed auto. It NEVER got stuck in the snow and drove like a tank before it needed brakes and new tyranny. Ended up in the crusher.

1974 Newport Custom 2 door. I could lay down in the front seat and just stretch from side to side. Best make out car I every had. Went from that to a late 70's Trans AM, rear wheel drive pretty good horse power living in South Dakota, lots of snow and ice fun.
