1972 2002Tii in Boston

Thanks to another poster here, I found pretty much the exact car I have been looking for. It is the same color scheme as the first one I owned in HS, same year, same Tii

The owner and I have been trading emails and have settled on a fair price contingent on a PPI. He is in the Boston area. I'll get the exact area, but I thought I'd start the search fr a reputable shop who knows these old cars now.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Ditto. When "the one" falls into your lap you'll know it, sounds like this may be it.

I am so jealous of this! Congratulations, if it does indeed to be the one you want.

The usual "look for rust" caveat. Good luck!

If you get a good vibe from the seller, just buy it. I assume we're not talking a huge sum of money, and what's the worst that could happen? Most any of these cars will need some amount of work. Worst case scenario is rust bucket. Maybe Shaun can take a look at it for you?

Just got off the phone with the owner of Little Foreign Car Garage in Waltham.

Wow, what a good dude.

I'm only really concerned with rust, but PPI's for these cars are very cheap...not a huge sum of money but enough to check six.

I've had at least one 2002 in my fleet since around '90 when i got my first one.

On a Tii i would want the kuglefischer injection to be in very good working condition. For what these cars are worth, you could spend a noticeable percentage of that repairing the injection system.

The rest is easy mechanically. Post some pics if you get it !

I should have mentioned that...the injection system is the key. Man was I ignorant back in the 70's.

I appreciate the reminder.

This is very cool Paul - congrats on getting this far in the process.

The garage owner probably relates to your passion - as anyone who knows these cars can, as well. That's huge that you are plugged in now with him and his shop, especially given the distance aspect of this deal.

Yes, please keep us posted as appropriate.....and good luck!

Cool that the mechanic worked out for you. He seems to have a following...

I went through a similar situation last summer, found an Inca Tii and the guy wanted 7k. From pics, car looked all original (guy's father was original owner), paint was shot and interior needed redoing, otherwise low miles, all there, no rust (?), etc.

While I was setting up a PPI, guy sold it...can't blame him. Nonetheless, one of my favorite cars. I'm jealous.

Good luck.

I'd be VERY skeptical of any car of that vintage from this part of the country. I'd certainly never buy one personally. WAY too many issues with rust, rot, salt, etc. Be VERY wary.

Newer cars with modern metallurgy and corrosion protection? Sure. Anything about 1990 or older? No way I'd touch it. 2002s are awesome but I'd be very careful. Lots of people claim "not driven in winter" or "never seen snow" or whatever but you can't believe it unless they're the original owner. Personally I wouldn't drive any car with rust succeptability here until at least three good torrential rains had washed away any traces of salt, sand, grit, etc. that would cause corrosion. Maybe I'm a bit neurotic here but I've seen first-hand what exposure to the conditions in the northeast will do to older cars and it ain't pretty.

The only hope is the fact that enthusiasts in the rust belt often seek out and buy their old European cars from points south and then truly stash them away for the winter.

In Minnesota, my home state, there are plenty of mint older cars from dry states stashed in garages. But if they're so much as driven on a warm spring day when there is still residual salt on the roads, they'll rust like a battleship on the bottom of the ocean.

Let's hope it's a dry car.

I can see why: very unrushed phone con, great website, very knowledible on these cars.

Thanks again, Rusty, I very much appreciate the tip in.

This car is a lot more then 7k so I am being very careful.

Be sure to check that you fit well in it, so you don't waste a lot of $$ fixing up a car that is too small inside for you, like on that 356.

"Waste?"

All efforts should work out as well as that 356. This will not be my first 2002.
