Superhero Musings

My son and I have been having long conversations about superheroes. Who's better: Justice League, or Avengers, or X-Men? Would Iron Man and Batman get along, as playboy billionaires with cool toys? Is Hulk cool or irritating? Should Wonder Woman really do superhero work, or should she use her lasso of truth in a police and investigative job? Was there a Marvel equivalent to Aquaman, or does DC rule the waves? Are superheroes who ride on boards automatically cooler? Are there non-American superheroes, like is Wolverine a Canadian?

I remember lots of time spent with comics and superhero cartoons when I was his age. Iron Man was my favorite, along with Batman and Daredevil. Marvel's characters weren't that cool to me. I remember all the variations on Superman - Superboy, Supergirl, Superdog, Superfetus - but thought they were all really square. I tried to like the Silver Surfer, but just couldn't figure him out.

Did you blow countless hours of your young life on superhero comics?

I spent my pocket money on Walt Disney comics, so I grew up on Donald Duck. Then Ritchie Rich, Beano (British I think), then onto Spider Man.

If I read comics these days I tend to read Viz magazine which is British. I particualy like Fat Slags and Biffer Bacon who are Viz characters - I wouldn't exactly call them super heros though.

I liked some DC and Marvel, but Marvel was definitely my preference. X-men, Daredevil, Spiderman, Avengers. Lots of good stuff out there.

"Spider Man" was my favourite when I was very young.
But when I was about 10 I discovered the "Silver Surfer" and that was that. Even now at 47 years of age he's still my favourite.

Although seeing the recent Avengers movie. I couldn't help but be impressed by The Hulk.

As a kid I was into Superman. I had a stack of the 12 cents comic boooks that was two feet high. My parents threw them in the dumpster when we moved.

I still have about 1000 in my basement still in their protective bags. Most are Hulk and Fantastic Four with some others thrown in. I also have some Superman from the 40s and a bunch of no name #1s. I'd like for my 8yr old to start reading them but with most being close to 40 years old I'm worried they are starting to be worth something.

Batman was my favorite, since he really didn't have any 'superpowers' he was just conditioned well. Also like the dark aspect of Batman, which was really done well in the last Batman movie with Heath Ledger as the Joker.

Started collecting books around the time Superman died, and when Bane broke Batman's back (Knightfall).

Still have just over 1,000 books - all in the plastic protective baggies. Some books I have of note are:

DC:
Action Comics 159 (1951)
Aquaman 2 (1962)
Batman 426 (1988) - Death of Robin
Flash 152 (1960)
Superman 75 (1993) - Death of Superman (Black Bag edition)

Marvel:
Amazing Spider-Man 37 (1966)
Amazing Spider-Man 100 (1971)
Avengers 11 (1964)
Submariner 5 (1968)

I've got my collection organized in a spreadsheet. If you are interested in any of them, PM me, and I can send you a list. As they say, everything's for sale!

-Z-man.

it would be great to be his best friend tho. my fishing skills, i imagine would be vastly improved.

my favorite as a kid was FLASH! no reason. i used to imitate him, but at much slower pace. my mom hated flash.

I was fairly into comics in my teens, transitioned to more mature titles in my 20s and dropped them altogether in my early 30s. My early favorites were Spider-Man, Iron Man and the Flash. I had issues 1 to 100 of Spider-Man, so I got a nice chunk of change when I sold my collection - even so, they're worth crazy money now and I still want to kick myself.

I got into Iron Man during the Michelinie/Layton years and dropped him when they left, but those years appear to have defined the direction of the character ever since. Those were the years that fleshed out the Tony Stark character (including making him an alcoholic), added the specialty armors for various environments, and increased his rogues gallery.

I dropped the Flash when Barry Allen died.

I went with more philosophical titles later, with my favorite being three year run of The Question by Denny O'Neil/Denys Kowan. I read Sandman and Constantine when they first came out, but eventually tired of them and sold them off. It's funny, when I sold the original Sandman issues, the guy was so suspicious - the idea of someone selling them seemed so odd to him. I also liked the odd but unsuccessul Miracleman series by Alan Moore, though he explores the same themes (has the man written something where a character - usually male - doesn't get raped?).

I'm still waiting for Matt Wagner to finish Mage.

We hate you so much right now Hugh

I grew up with the basics - Batman, Superman, X-Men, etc. I don't have many comics from the Marvel/DC series, but I do have plenty of Image, Dark Horse, Top Cow, etc.

I have to ask, though: Who would the DC equivalents of The Punisher and Deadpool be?
