So?
Ok, this isn't a rant, but I've noticed experts, scientists, intellectuals, medical authorities, etc., etc. Starting almost every sentence with "So." So is this a new trend with educated people? So is it something here to stay? So haven't any of you noticed it? So if "So", can you explain it to me?? So is it just a "so" what thing? So I think people who start every sentence with "Well" is sort of weird too. So I'm out of here for the evening soon, so I'll be interested in what some of you have to say later.

When I used to be a member of Toastmaster's , I think that overuse of a word would not be good. So if used it too frequently in a conversation it would be frowned upon. In a bar it would not matter. In a business deal it might soooo matter. To impress or not to impress.....not as bad as it a'int for it isn't though.

It's become embeded in our corporate culture. To me, it smacks of disrespect, like ignoring your direct question, and making it appear as an original thought.
"Did you make it to work in time?" "So, I started in to work today, and...."

Standard practice where I work. I've mentioned it to several co-workers. I thought it was a local thing. And apparently contagious.

The one I like in conversation is, "Well no, yeah."
I start a lot of thread replies with "well." However, in writing, I never use the same word twice in a paragraph and try not to for at least two consecutive.

made me laugh
I got in the habit of saying "anyways" a lot when I was in HS. Mom had just gone to this seminar where some braniac from Stanford was talking about investing. First thing she said when I asked was, "You would think that someone with that level of education would not say "anyways" every other sentence." She laughed the first 15 or 20 times, then told me to knock it off because I was too smart to sound that stupid. Many are not strong at public speaking, I attribute this sort of thing with nerves.
