Has anybody sold a Z3/Z4 to buy a Boxster ....

or vica versa? Just curious if I am missing something as I never tried out a Z3/Z4 before I bought my Boxster base 2001?

To answer your question "no" but I did research 2-seat convertibles rather extensively a few years ago. I actually had a Boxster S picked out and went down to buy it but it had sold that day. I went back, checked out the Z3, Z4, S2000, Boxster (base and S) and the Mercedes SLK along with the Audi TT. IMHO the Z4 is twice the car the Z3 ever was. Far better overall, tighter, better designed, better ergonomics. Even if the Z4 is arguably uglier with the "Bangle butt". I liked it. The S2000 sucks below about 7,000 RPM. The Boxster models are awesome handling, tight, well-built but obviously come with the "chick" stigma. I don't care. I'd drive one and let people call it a chick car while handing them their azzes at autox events or just blasting around. They're both good. The S models are substantially better IMHO.

The Audi TT was nice, tight and well-built but it's an Audi (which frightened me from a maintenance standpoint) and I found the performance to be lacking given that it was a twin-turbo. Still, not a bad car.

I ended up with the Mercedes SLK which has been an outstanding car. At this point you should be able to find the far-more-desirable AMG SLK32 models than my SLK-320 for in the teens, comparable in price to a Boxster. I recommend the SLK-320 far more than the SLK-230 Kompressor model. Manual 6-speed, better low-end performance, etc. Both are good, I really like the V6. YMMV.

That's because it's not a twin turbo

not the single turbo, it is the ponderous weight of the TT that makes it feel like a slug

My bad... yes the TT is a turbo (one turbo) but it still had the performance of a slug. Sorry, you're correct on both counts.

You won't be happy. The Boxster is a real sports car. The Z3/Z4 is a nice pretend sports car. Of course the M version is not included in this opinion.
