Remember when mattresses had those rope handles attached to the sides through grommets?

No more. Some gubmint safety-at-all-costs KNOW-IT-ALL decided that if your house caught on fire, the mattress will blaze up a lot faster AND YOU WILL DIE if those grommets are there to let the heat into the inside of the mattress. They figured this out by "testing" with a propane torch aimed directly at those grommet holes... so said our mattress guy a coupla years ago when we got a new one... which looks somewhat like this... a queen size.

Good mattress. Very heavy. Not easy to flip without those handles.

In Googling for that pic, I ran across these... we were not lucky enough to score one with these SAFE mattress flipping handles. :(

I will defer to VINMAN on this one... if he says the rope-handles-through-grommets were INSTRUMENTS OF CERTAIN DEATH, I'll cease to complain, but they used to be considered safe.

Thats a new one to me with the mattresses! Never heard that. I know all bedding material has to meet a certain "flame retardancy " requirement. Maybe because of the tedency to use foam pading inside, which has a high combustibilty and VOC, you would want to prevent fire from entering, but if you have enough fire to cause that problem you are in deep doo-doo already so it it a moot point by then.

I always thought the grommets were for the handle and to help ventilate the mattress also.

this is new to me too!

remember when shotgun shells came in huge cases that i think were 12 boxes? now you can only get half cases. i was told it was a weight thing. people hurting their backs.

what about handles on five gallon water jugs? gone.

my new mattress has handles. but there was a note that stated it was for sliding the mattress back and forth, and not to be use to carry.

Hard playground sand. The safer alternative is shredded tires baking in the sun.

VINMAN 05-16-2012 10:40 AM

Playground sand?? In Brooklyn we had blacktop under the metal swings and monkey bars, and 15 ft high aluminun slide.

You can still buy by the case. 10 boxes of 25. UPS will still deliver ORMD to your door or in the instance of my buying 3-4 cases of 10 ga ammo he will back his truck right up to the garage to keep from having to move them very far.

Riding on the handlebars of a bike. Although once I got my foot caught in the spokes behind the fork and we both went ass over teakettle. Nothing broken. Kids are tough.

We had some of those in FL too, I would carry my bike up the slide & ride down it, lots of fun but not too many other kids around me would try it..

Drinking sodas, I have a feeling that in 30 years they will be viewed in the light as cigarettes are today.

Not buckling your kid up in a 5 ton truck with airbags and On-Star to drive him home 2 blocks while wearing a fatsuit, helmet and and gloves for extra collision protection while driving him home from school.

Flame retardant and many other toxins are found in women's breast milk -- that is in the US, and in some pretty upscale women too

This requires more testing, especially empirical tests for the correlation of cup size vs. safety levels.

Eating raw cookie dough, rare hamburgers, or products with cyclimates.

On a brighter note, running with sissors is still dangerous...
